Hi Guys,

For those of you who have never done a valve shim adjustment or are a little intimidated about it I thought I would make a quick video that covers most of the procedure, of course you will need the manual while doing this.

Here is the video, and please subscribe as I have a bunch of other videos coming in the near future.

YouTube - Land cruiser 1HZ 1HDT 1PZ Valve shim adjustment tutorial

Louis

Great video, thanks.

What is the recommended km's to do the valve adjust?
Is this based on km's driven, or is it a "Listen to the Engine" kind of decision?
Do you have a place to purchase a valve shim assortement, and a place to rent the SST?

When I used to adjust the valves on my old HJ60 (2H motor) the adjust had to be done with the motor hot, having the motor cold is a lot easier. Also to rotate the motor and line up the crank pulley groove I used to put the rear on jack stands and then rotate the rear tire while it was in gear while someone watched the crank markings...likely this would not be possible with full time 4X4 unless the front propeller shaft was disconnected?

If on the first try of lining up the crank pulley and it turns out that instead of #1 being loose, it is tight........then likely you do not have to rotate the 360 degrees to get #1 tight....you just do the other 3 cylinders first....saves some labour.

Is there a valve cover gasket that needs to be replaced at this time, if so do you have a part number?

this should be in the FAQ, brilliant video. how much did the sst cost?

Now, I wish if there is some tutorial on how to adjust the IP timing on 1HD-T..

I would make one if i can get the timing tool, if anyone has one let me know and i'll make the vid!

Mr Louis

Great Work .
Best Toyota Porn site I've seen.

What tool are you requiring ? Plunger depth gauge ? post a pix.

Ya whatever the injection pump timing tool is - lever type that goes on the pump. Don't have the number right now - buried in the garage!

I think it cost me about 180 iirc. Used it a few times already - always use it when I get a new 1HDT or 1HZ not matter what the odometer says on it.

I love to see stuff like this.
It teaches me. I would love to see the injection pump timing job.

Great videos! Just what I (and my mechanic) needed! The FSM says to replace the turbo gasket, but I've heard some say it's unnecesary. Thoughts?

What turbo gasket? I wouldn't bother if it's the ones I am thinking about.

Just did a valve adjustment. Having watched this video, and getting some help and guidance from GnarlyNick made the whole process mostly painless.

I had a noticeable ticking that I'm assuming was from the #5 exhaust valve that was 5 thousandths out of spec. That went away, and generally the engine just seemed to run smoother, and preformed slightly better.

Is the turbo gasket you are mentioning between the cross over pipe and the intake manifold?

Where are you guys buying your shims from? I had already read through the FSM on this job and it seemed pretty straight forward. After watching this video, I can safely say it is pretty straight forward. I have the SST on order but am curious if you guys pull it apart and then order the shims individually and wait. I would love to have some on hand, but that might not be cost effective. I saw that cruiseparts has them. Any other place in the US that has shims in stock and can overnight them?

Anyone happen to have torque values for valve cover bolts and intake x-over pipe bolts?

I've looked through a couple different iterations of 1HZ manual and cant find a value for either of these.

The most recent version omits values in reinstall procedures
