Hey fellas did a post up earlier about my 1hdt not starting. I had the issue where the starter motor was clicking so I replaced it with a new one as the old one was stuffed. After replacing the new starter it still clicks. If I earth the starter motor out to the battery the starter will crank over and start motor. If I earth the starter to the block it will only slightly crank over not enough to start the car. Any ideas what could cause this ? Bad block to chassis earth causing starter to not be able to earth out itself ?

Make sure the main engine earth connection plus the main connections to the battery are in good shape. If you're directly earthing the starter and it runs, but you are not getting the same result earthing to the block it seems likely the main earth off the motor is no good. The starter is a very high current inrush load when the solenoid engages the main contacts so the current path from battery to starter and back needs to be in good order.

Cheers for the reply mate would you have any clue of the locations of the main earth points for the starter and block/ chassis ?

Main engine earth attaches (for 1hz in my 80 - I guess 1hdt and 1hdft are the same) at bottom left of the block and runs back to the negative terminal of the starting (left side) battery.

This is the original main engine earth attachment point to the block of my 80's 1hz motor before I re-made the cable

The starter is bolted to the block and earths through the outer casing and via the engine block back to the main earth.

The main positive supply to the starter goes direct from the positive terminal of the starting (left side) battery.

Make sure you check the battery terminals and connections to them as well as they can come loose or just have a poor connection.

Sweet thanks heeps mate

it should be fine to run a new big earth cable from the battery to the bolt where the starter bolts into ?. This should hopefully solve the earth issue I’m having

It's better to continue your previous thread if you still have related issues, rather than start a new one.
Saves everyone trying to figure out your original issue, and what you've been told already, or tried already etc
