I have decided to go with the 1HD-T in my Cruiser and wanted to know more about these big end bearings you all have been talking about. I have researched quite a few Toyota diesels and have decided that this engine is the best for me.

I'm not worried about replacing the bearings as it seems smart to do so from the information I have read about them. I am still not sure if the bearing itself is actually faulty or if something else is causing the bearings to fail.....like oil...?...what's in your oil?

I have read that some countries have oil products on the shelf that have high metal and copper levels that lead to bearing and premature engine failures......I would almost believe it in the age we live in with all the clean and long lasting engines..you have to make the dollar some how.

My last question is easy also...for you all who have been fortunate to be around these diesels. I am assuming that all of the 1HD-T's are mechanically injected?

The ACL bearings from OZ are supposed to be harder.
There has never been in real proof about what causes the failure.
Some blame crank vibration or hard driving.
So Australia should then get more failures and but it doesnt seem to have a higher rate.
Plenty of one owner low klm JdM engines also fail.
THE 1HZ which has the same crank and bearings and 30HP less ,rarely suffers from bearing damage.

THey have mechanical fuel injectors and pump.

How has the old 12H-T held up BEB wise. I havent seen any talk of problems with them.

Other than being older and not quite as powerful as the 1HD-T, do the hold up as well?

Or are parts getting impossable to find?

it was a poor bearing design and turbo 1HZ can show same symptoms.

replace not only the big end (rod) bearing shells but also the bolts (G&S has kits for this).

yes, mechanical pump on the hd-t

rick-
have one in arizona

Abosely...I have a close friend that has an 84 HJ-47 high top with the 12H NA version he put a Banks turbo on. I suppose the engine is sold now but what a hell of an engine....I believe he had about 250,000 km's on her and has had no problems with the bearings. I do remember him always going thru glow plugs for some reason....but you would have to meet him and you would probably understand why. It seems like parts are just as available for both engines.....takes a little longer to get them.

Thanks Rick for the G&S lead on the bearing parts. I have actually decided they are who I will get the engine from after talking to more than a dozen Japanese engine suppliers here in the states...can't seem to find anyone who I could trust until a guy gave me Sheldon's email. Haven't really talked to them much yet "Thought I'd leave them alone till I was absolutely ready"
