my 7.3 powersmoke gets 28 mpg at 100 km/hr, no trailer
when pulling a 8000# load it drops to 15 mpg.
there is a reason why i went with a large unit for pulling my trailer.

cheers

Thanks Wayne. It is good to get this kind of information. That is a drastic drop towing a trailer. But good economy unladen! I'm impressed, that's about 10% better than I'm getting with my 81 on the highway!

hey have you ever considered loosing the full time 4wd? switch to manual lock hubs and you'll get a far better fuel economy I own a 1995 hdj80, 1hd-t, automatic, dual fuel tanks and it came with manual locking hubs and it is a vx not a gx model

Does anyone know what rpm/gear the 1HD-T makes best power for towing?

I understand that I should tow with OD off but at 100kph isn't that at the top of the power band?

Some related questions when towing with 1HD-T and A442F auto-trans...
  1. When pulling a load up long hillls, what engine speeds are harder on an auto tranny? i.e. keep it in D at 2200 or downshift to 3?
  2. Same situation as above, but now what is the effect on ATF temperature of driving in D at 2200 RPM compared to downshifting to 3?
  3. When the AT temperature warning light comes on, what is the best way to cool the AT?

Thanks, -Steve

Hi Steve. This might be best posted over to the 80 board, if not already done so. Also, check out the 3FE list at birfield.com. Rodney, from Wholesale automatics in Oz has many posts there talking about transmissions, heat, and how to work around. There is a weath of information there as well from other posters, talking about the LandCruiser auto trannsmissions.

Steve ..

IMOP and IMexperience .. with 1HD-T and H442F auto tranny .. keep it as fresh as you can..

In a long uphill O/D off is allways your rule .. if you heva your shifter points adjusted soo soft .. manual shift maybe is a good idea ..

I target are keep your tranny freash .. if you are pulling or running your tranny with much sleepery you gotta melt it ..

1. It all depends on your load
2. The higher the revs the harder on the tranny
3. Stop and shift to park(idling) until the light goes out

Thanks!

I've also found out that the torque converter doesn't lock up in 3rd gear, so there is a lot of slippage when pulling a load at higher RPMs which can cause the tranny to overheat.

Downshifting may reduce EGTs but will increase ATF temps.

it depends .. if you donwshift with no slipage .. not neceary up the ATF temp.

I believe that once the load is on the move you shouldn't have much effort to keep it going but, if you plan to haul for an extended period of time, be sure to let that tranny work where it works best that is if you're going uphill downshift to 2n and go so the engine has enough power but it doesn't mean that you should go fast of course this applies for long and steep hills for a short one you shouldn't have any trouble leaving the trans as is. For the record I've never seen those AT/temp lights go on in any land cruiser i saw it once in a Montero but thats another story. Besides is your tranny working properly have you given it proper care?

This would be a really good way to burn your tranny. Out of O/D the A442 runs hot, because the Torque converter is so inefficient. If you can get enough power in OD without exceeding max EGT's, leave the OD on. Better yet, get a tranny temp gauge so you can keep an eye on what's going on. By the time the ATF light comes on, you may be doing damage = $$$$. Just ask wussypup what sort of $ we're talking about.

How you do turn off the full-time 4wd? Is there a switch or fuse or something to turn off? I don't have the manuals - I also don't see some obvious switch on the dashboard that says "4WD off" or something on theI have a 1990 HDJ81 VX Limited.

There are kits out there to do this, a set of manual hubs and some parts to replace the center diff in the Tcase. The center diff button becomes the front drive button.

Haven't people who did this said it made no difference in terms of fuel consumption? I suppose it might reduce some wear on the front end.

I can't talk about consumption .. but centanly, les frond diff wear and are by far more faster .!

I'm amazed that anyone would want to run an 80 series up to 180 kph. I didn't even know they could go that fast.

I'm alwais in love with a sport fast car .. and speed, but If you drive 200 km/h one car that is designed for speed, and go up and drive a Cruiser more dan 140 km/h you can feel the diference ..

I'm happy driving my Cruiser at 120km/h no more .. this is great speed for a 4x4 2 ton rigs ..
