Does anyone know what rpm/gear the 1HD-T makes best power for towing?

I understand that I should tow with OD off but at 100kph isn't that at the top of the power band?

max power is 165 ps at 3600 rpm and max torque is 37kgm at 2000 rpm, just like harveya said...

How much wieght are you planning on towing?
And for how long? And over what type of terrain (flat? mountains?).

Personally, I would not run my 1HD-T at 3000 rpm for any longer than I had to.
Diesel's don't like being reved high for a long time.
Use the gearing and torque of a diesel.
I would use the overdrive and run your normal 2200 or so.

Cheers,
Nick

Higher RPM tho breaths better, less EGTS. holding an overdrive on a hill at 2000rpm with lots of foot into it will be hotter than running it at 3k. Like Wayne said drive slower if fuel economy is wanted. 90 kph Hard across Alberta tho. Southern Alberta is like a wasteland, flat and boring. But fuel is cheap(there) so you can speed across it :)

thanks for the info. So I should be fine running highway speeds at 3000rpm towing?

any idea how much that will affect fuel consumption?

I towed around 5500 pounds across Canada with an HJ60, standard, and averaged 14mpg. With the truck alone I get 26mpg. I think halving your usual milage is a decent rule of thumb when you are pulling over 4000 lbs.

ROTFLMAO!!

i drove a FJ45 from Edmonton back down to Calgary a few years back... what a relaxing drive. you really learn to appreciate that you are missing NOTHING if you drive 140 on that road....

Thats an express way thru there.

I was more refering to the drive from Calgary on the #1 to the sask boarder.

Do it at night. Sask is even more entertaining.

Worst part when you come from the East, you hit the boarder going into Alberta and think WOW we got some neat stuff coming up, there are some big sand hills and the roads curves a bit..... You get mountain crazy. But then you realize there is nothing for about 5 more hours.......

exactly .. !

I was always under the impression that for driving loaded (with a load, not under the influence ;-) ), the best RPM to run is about the torque peak.

I know what you mean. But what is the torque at on a 3B? I thought it was pretty low, like 1800- or 2000. Can't remember.

If I was loaded on a hill and lugging it at that rpm the temps get really high. If I downshift and rev it a little, say 3000. then it cools right off.

Sure I am over the torque peak(rpm) but I don't think that the torque peak and egts are related. It all has to do with what load is on the engine at that torque peak. This would make a good dyno test. add resistance and have to downshift and monitor egts.......

2200 in B - 2B and 13B-T

I think you're going to be very unhappy with your fuel economy running at 3000rpm on your diesel all day. It would be interesting to compare what you'd get doing that with going with something larger (domestic - gasp) that might be working far less hard for the same speed. I've posted elsewhere that I've found my 1HDT is very sensitive to RPM with respect to fuel consumption.
