Hi, I bought a early 1990 (#191) HDJ80 with the 1HD-T engine 2 months ago, and after reading about the BEB problem the last week I've started to notice a slight knicking/tapping sound. It might also be worth mentioning that the oil pressure drops a little when the engine is hot.

I'm not sure if the BEBs have been changed during the 400k km (245k miles) that the car have driven. Other than the sound and the oil pressure the engine runs fine. Do you guys think it might be the BEB, or is that problem long overdue considering the mileage? Is it likely that the low oil pressure is because of an old sensor? I've read somewhere that these get less accurate over time.

Attached pictures of oil pressure and the (so far 100% stock) rig

Do the BEB's. It's a PM job. Every 1HD-T I've ever seen (many) has a rattle of some kind. I just switched to a winter Wakos full synthetic and it's the first time this engine (230k kms) has been quiet.....relatively speaking. At 400K you probably have some other things ticking, clacking and knocking. Just do the BEB's first.

Oil pressure is normal for a lighter oil like 10w30....maybe a little low if it's dipping further at operating temperature. What do you have in it now?

You and I both should get proper gauges.

Did mine last December, 200k Km, was not sure when they got done, 4 hours job. Fill up oil T6 rotella for winter driving here in Toronto and now am good to go for another 50 k Km or more

Oil pressure is measured on a warmed engine at 2500.It must maintain pressure for 2mins(or os it one minute) without dropping off.
Your factory gauge looks boringly normal to me.

BUT I would do the BEB ASAP. Its only small money compared to a new crank instal.
Most owners use the ACL bearings from OZ.

Easy job that doesn't take long, but offers peace of mind.

With that said, I have to believe that the reports of these bearing failures are far lower that initially believed. When I first bought my truck at 115,000km's I barely even drove it out of fear of bearing failure (prior to replacement), but now that I've been on here for a few years I have to imagine that these failures are extremely rare. I mean I'd love to have a supply of cheap 1HD-T and HDJ81 parts on the market due to engine issues, but it just doesn't seem to be the case at all and there are a lot of them out there with the original bearings in place.

My gauge shows like that, others it's way up when cold... I do not trust it, need to rig up a temp gauge to check things once and for all

My gauge always read low, installed a real gauge a few months ago and the oil pressure is healthy near the top end of the factory spec.

Gauge looks uselessly normal to me too...

Thank you. I've decided to park the car in the garage for the next week and change the bearings. Are the ACL bearings a one size fits all? I've been offered some, but the guy that has them only said "standard dimension".

I think there is an oversize set but you just want the standard set.

I think its a dangerous game to suggest that this is not an issue to be aware of and treat as PM. I wonder if its not the regular occurrence here because it is a known issue (experience from Oz and Europe long before we got regular access to these engines) and people are changing them. I do know of failures from folks not doing them when they got their rigs off the boat. And we have picked up a few cores over the years. On engines we have processed I have have seen a good percentage showing pitting. And fewer with good bearings.

Better safe than sorry...
Do you just have to lift the car on the frame to get enough clearance to get the oil pan out?

I got mine out without lifting. Dirty job and lots of swearing getting the final torque but it's only a few hours of misery.

32mm socket...@tweeek is correct, just measured mine
