Hi everybody!

The vehicle whose engine I want to swap is a PZJ-70 with a 4 speed transmission (R141F).

I was considering swapping the 1PZ for a 1HZ or 1HD-T or 1HD-FT or the 1HD-FTE?

What are the pros and cons swapping with the 4 engines listed above? And what problems would I face with regard to the engine mounts, electronics, gearbox etc?

Thanks.

As long as you stay clear of the 1HD-FTE you should be fine on the electronics.

I do not think that the R141F will live long behind the 1HD engines. But hey it might.

If your 1PZ is not damaged or in need of a huge and expensive overhaul I would urge you to retain it and work the performance gains you wish into it.

Thanks for your reply Japan4X4!

Why would you not recomment a swap with a 1HZ, for example, if I can get the engine cheaply? Is the increase in power not appreciable ? Are there other mechanical problems associated with the swap?

Secondly, how could I increase the performance of the 1PZ without turbocharging it? I've heard that after-market turbos decrease the life of the engine substantially and I'd rather not do that.

Thanks.

I would have to strongly disagree with a turbo shorting the life of a Diesel especially a Toyota Diesel. I have turbo'd 3B's, 1HZ's, PZJ's, 2H and they are all doing great.

What you might be hearing is the myth based on some people that turn the boost up to rediculus levels, that will certainly shorten the life. If you stick to the recommended specs from any of the aftermarket turbos you should be fine.

I have used the Safari, AXT, Factory Toyota, and Turbo-glide and for the simplicity and best price I strongly recommend the Trubo-Glide. the are far better priced that anyone else, they do not push the limits at all, are easy to install and work great! They use Garret turbos, the nicer tubo clamps and hoses and some nice cast piping where needed. I am pretty sure they have a kit for the PZJ and I can tell you that a PZJ with a turbo is a great improvement and in US Dollars you are talking less that 3k for the job, it is hard to get performance improvement of any other kind for that price

Just something to think about.

Cheers

tlcruiserman- thanks for replying!

Would you prefer an engine swap with a 1HZ or turbo-charging the 1PZ?

I'm not very knowledgeable about these matters, but I've read and heard that Toyota factory turbo-charged engines are designed differently as compared to non turbo engines. Don't turbo charged engines have different heads, pistons, piston skirting cooling etc? Don't all these differences play a major role in the engine life and performance? Will my engine life be shortened at all if I turbo charge my 1PZ?

I'm especially concerned because I've bought my vehicle 2nd hand, with 1,59,000kms on the clock. Compression tests show 31kg/cm3 on all cylinders. The range being 27-37kg/cm3, I think. Also diesel quality, replacement parts, and trained mechanics are in short supply, here in Nepal. Due to all these factors, Toyota Diesels don't last beyond 2,50,000-300,000kms at the most.

In light of the above, what would you reccommend?

Many thanks!
