Howdy everyone,

my 4Runner with the 1GR-FE started having this residue here. This is the cold level of the reservoir tank as well.

Recently, probably a month ago, I noticed the reservoir was low. Never overheated, I've looked but can't find any residue indicating a leak. I'm guessing it could be the radiator and I just can't see it behind the fan shroud?

It seems the residue is from the coolant overflowing the lid? But why would it do that?

I did replace the upper and lower hoses as well as drain and fill the coolant I think before winter of 2023. Didn't do the thermostat or radiator but I will now. Thanks for reading!

You could try to find a new overflow tank cap and hose assembly.

Try to peek at it after you filled it and get it temp to see if it's leaking right there at the cap?

Also, could be radiator cap...getting "indecisive" about relieving pressure to the over flow tank...

That looks to me like coolant is getting pushed from the radiator into the bottle, and it leaking past the gasket. It's just a hole in the top.

check this hose and port to make sure it's clear. Mine died at 430xxx miles and i replaced this cap with new hoses.

That hose doesn't go anywhere, just touches the side of the tank, there's pink residue there as well. Residue on the bottom edges of the cap as well. Gonna probably just replace radiator, radiator cap and this little cap and hoses. Just crossed 200k so trying to stay ahead of an issues.

that hose is supposed to drain excess coolant on the ground. Make sure that tiny hose isn't clogged, just to be on the safe side.

I will pull it off and make sure after work. When I took the radiator cap off (cold) the coolant was all the way to the tippy top. Is it supposed to be? Never messed with radiators before.

yes, the radiator is usually topped off naturally, and all excess ends up in the overflow tank that you're messing with.

i'm also curious if your overflow tank is separating? Could be just a coincidence but clean it off and give it a real close looksie!

Good idea, thanks.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, if maybe the mold seam had a crack in it and if fluid had been added recently it was more likely to ooze out of the cap or upper area of the tank.
