Hi guys,

Recently after I removed the LPG system from the car to run straight petrol, it takes a bit longer to start. If I leave the car for a prolonged period of time (12+ hours), the car does not start, but cranks. After 5 seconds of cranking, I stop cranking, wait 5 seconds then crank again and it will start.

Occasionally it will crank for 10 seconds or more before it will decide to start. If I leave the car for under 12 hours, it start within 2-3 seconds of cranking.

Is it likely to be a fuel pressure issue?

Thanks in advance

I’ve got a similar issue that I believe is a leaking injector. Starts faster after being off for a short period or for more than a day or so. I’m thinking the 6-18 hour range is a good timeframe for the injector to leak fuel into the cylinder. Beyond that, low pressure in the fuel rail doesn’t cause any more leaking. Just a theory, but I plan to pull the upper intake off one day to check.

To be clear joeuen, is this a fuel injected 1FZ FE? A carbureted 1FZ F?

I'm no carb expert, but it sounds to me like fuel slowly draining out of the fuel bowl, so the fuel pump needs to re-fill it while cranking before fuel is available to the engine.

Bumping an old thread. I’m having this slow crank issue on my fuel injected 1fz-fe and wondering what I could do to help it fire up nice and quick

Try turning ignition on but wait a few seconds before turning to crank. Will allow fuel pressure to build might help isolate if that's your issue.

No, it won't.

The fuel pump does not run unless the engine is rotating.

I tried leaving the key turned on didn’t make any difference unfortunately. I grabbed 2 bottles of fuel injector cleaner today and have almost run 1 bottle through a full tank of petrol so hopefully it will give the injectors a good clean and possibly help. I have a brand new RACV 850cca battery I just put in so it’s defiantly got good cranking power. If injector cleaner doesn’t help I’ll try a new fuel filter

Doesn't work with Toyota's fuel pump control logic

Update - so I’ve run a full bottle of Penrite injector cleaner through the fuel system coupled with a full tank of 98 octane petrol. And the startup is almost instantaneous long with rough idle fixed and way more get up and go. Cheers for replies, seems this one’s solved. Also if anyone else is running the 4 speed auto transmission and it’s feeling sloppy/hesitant/laggy - go ahead and change your transmission fluid with a fresh new lot particularly fully synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. I did this yesterday and the transmission feels brand new, very smooth, I’m quiet impressed what new fluid can achieve.

its in the drivers front fender. I would just change it.
Ok so I’m in Australia which I’m not sure if that makes a difference to where the relay is but I can’t find any relay in the fender :/ unless it’s really really hidden and I need to pull off the underside of the wheel arch?

EGR or VSV?

Just a thought

Copied post by @gofast back in 2007:

I no longer have an 80 so I can't take a pic.
The relay is accessed through the engine compartment. I don't have a picture but think I can describe it.

Its on the driver side (LHD), top of the inner fender and is about 2/3 of the distance between the grill and the firewall - starting from the grill.

You will see a fist sized hole (cut out) in the inner fender there. In this hole is the relay.

Why Toyota tucked it away like that I have no idea.

To help pin point, look for your ABS unit and you are about the right area. You will likely not see the relay well as its hidden inside the cut out.

In the US it’s in the left. Just forward of the firewall, you’ll only see a bolt head as there is a Z bracket that positions the relay inside the fender out of sight.

The cleaning thread that I just posted may give you a better visual. 🍻
