Out of the blue, one day it would crank, but not start:(

No Check Engine Light with ignition key turned

Checked voltage through all fusable links: All good
Checked all fuses: All good
Checked voltage in under hood fuse box: All good
Replaced EFI relay
Checked voltage on interior OBD2 and under hood test port: All good
No spark
No voltage on coil power supply wires.
I did a quick inspection on the wires near the EGR and they seem ok.

I'm about test and inspect the ECM wiring.

What's the most likely cause?

I'd appreciate any ideas, so I can check those first.

check the resistance on your coil
and you spark plug wires.
how does the inside of you cap and rotor look
how old are your plugs

does it have an alarm?

if yes, there is usually a little button in the wiring harness you can hold in to bybass the circuitry and try to start it. there are also a few fuses in that area usually taped up you should look for and check as well.

not sure if you have a manual.

Check wiring between ignition switch to ignition
coil and igniter.

Here's tidbit for those who are color challenged:

...
No Check Engine Light with ignition key turned = ECM wire/power trouble
...

With the key to run, is there power at the B+ term in the diagnosis connector?

Happens a lot on vehicles with a CPK (crankshaft position sensor) I believe the later model 80's have them, but I'm not positive. When they go dead they generally don't leave you with any warning, you just go out to a car that cranks but won't fire.

Here is the flow chart for troubleshooting.

Edit: Added the crank sensor check.

I've established the the ECM has power. Would a bad sensor cause the Check Engine light to NOT to illuminate? (ignition on)

With ECM powered, what other conditions would cause the Check Engine light to NOT to illuminate? (ignition on)

CEL gets +12V from the 10A Gauge fuse via J1 junction connector. The ECM drives the other side of the CEL bulb to ground to light it up.

So, verify +12V is getting to the bulb. Verify that the bulb is not blown...

Given that the CEL is meant to light with engine not running and key moved to on position - it's a self check of the bulb, I doubt that any sensor malfuction would cause the CEL to not light. would be counterproductive.

Fusible links are suspect even if you have measured with a meter and no actual load - there's no load versus things being on/running.

cheers,
george.

Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your FJ80?

confirming that fusible links solved this issue for me. Figures that I have kept a brand new spare set in my offroad 80, but had these fail in my driver 80, 5 hours from home. Some wiggling and tiewrapping on two occasions worked.
