Gray, is original assembly line color. I do not know if there is an aftermarket gray product used for pans- The gray I know from Permetex is for water based contact (ala freeze plugs- and that water pipe)
10-4. Thank you!

My 2cents in the mysterious grey substance is :
The powder of the clutch disk , mixed with a light film of oil still present on the bell.
Hint 😉, try to taste the grey substance , and a bit of the clutch , might have the same taste 😳😎

I already did. Tastes like chicken.

Decided to “quickly” swap over my drive flanges to the Aisin manual locking hubs.

Broke an M8x1.25 stud while running my impact the wrong direction (“Sh*t!!!”).

I was able to get it out with an EZ-Out, but slowed me down pretty good.

I decided to go ahead and replace all of the studs, cone washers, split washers, nuts, and gaskets while I’m at it. They were all pretty gnarly.

What is your favorite tool to remove M8x1.25 studs? I have always used the “double-nut” method with mixed results.

1) instead of the easy-out, I would have grabbed that stud with vice grips ...... And if that didn't work, weld a nut to it and unscrew it.
2) Stud remover tool works great, otherwise, double-nut and remove

This is my new 1996 HZJ75 Land Cruiser Pickup.

Some of the specs are:
  • GCC Market from Qatar (former military truck)
  • Diesel
  • 1HZ Engine
  • 12-Volt Power System
  • Dual Fuel Tanks
  • 36,000 kms
  • No rust
  • Factory PTO Winch
  • Hand Throttle
  • H55F 5-Speed Transmission
  • Toyota “Split” Transfer Case
  • Toyota Full Float Rear Axle

Wish me luck as I drive it home from LA to Austin, TX! (More pics and details once I get it home)

And yes, @Gun Runner 5, I have posted the truck in the US 70 Series Registration thread. ;)
Hi all, I am new here. I recently joined because I was looking to learn more about GCC spec cruisers like the one pictured. Do you have any tips on importing 70 series trucks from Qatar/the GCC region? I will be in Qatar for a temporary posting and am looking to buy a 96 or older 70 series to daily while there then import back to the US. How hard is it to find a military truck, and do they command much of a premium? Does importing one from the GCC come out cheaper than buying an already imported 70 in the USA? From what I have seen in online listings, old GCC cruisers don't seem to depreciate as much as I'd expect, so were you able to get a deal? Any tips would be much appreciated!

My wife and I just got back from vacation yesterday. We spent a week in Santa Fe, NM and Telluride, CO. We had a great time, but I’m glad to be home so I can wrench on the truck.

After work this afternoon I pulled the bellhousing and inspected the front bearing retainer. I was just going to replace the input seal and front bearing retainer gasket, then put it back together.

But the transmission is filthy. What do you guys recommend to clean it up before reassembly? My go-to method is Purple Power, scrub brush, and a pressure washer (after sealing up with plastic bags and duct tape). Any suggestions?

I like purple power,,, if you can find "workhorse" at a janitor supply place that stuff is almost as good as kerosene.

Awesome. I’ll see if I can find some. I may just use Simple Green and elbow grease.

I tried to wire brush the heater core water inlet (driver’s side) this afternoon and the bead-rolled edge of the fitting disintegrated on the first pass - totally corroded from tap water. I tried to pull the fitting from the block with the engine in place, but completely mangled it.

Space is really tight in that area, so I decided to just go ahead and pull the engine and work on it on a stand. There are a variety of other things I want to do with the engine out anyway, so this just pushed me to go ahead and pull it.

I made good progress, but didn’t take many (any) photos. Battery out, radiator out, fan/clutch removed. Power steering, vacuum, and fuel lines disconnected. Starter out.

I’ll update with photos once I get the engine on the stand.

@Onur - Didn’t you say the radiator was toast? You were correct. It nearly came completely apart while pulling it.

Success!

However, the spread on the arms on my engine stand isn’t long enough. I need the top arms to be longer.

I need some longer replacement engine stand fingers.

Wait: what’s wrong with the engine??

The H2O heater inlet on the block was toast. I needed room to access and replace it.
