My engine began knocking last fall, and today my transmisssion began slipping.
1996 FZJ80 1FZFE
I've always wanted to add power. Any suggestions?
LS400?
Chevy or Ford V-8 adapter kits?
Stay I-6 which has always been a steady runner!?
HELP!!!!

Search around.

The ls400 V8 wont yield much hp for the trouble(250hp vs the stock 212hp)

The chevy V8 conversion is popular and the adapters are readily available.

Most however, would prefer a 1fz-fe rebuild with some slight tuning done to get some more HP and be done with it.

Art - details on your rig? How many miles on it? Checked the obvious (tranny fluid, etc.)? Your problems may be cheaper to just fix

250,000 miles, oil changed every 3,000 and tranny/diff every 15,000. Lifter tick is very slight, but lower power than I am used to in my LC. Tranny actually slipped when accellerated from stop for about 5 sec, let engine idle back quickly to avoid "jolt" into gear. This is 2nd time in last six months it happened. Fluid is full and clean, screen changed last summer, 100% fluid flush regularly (after every tow in case over heated and/or every 15,000 miles). Recent development: when I place shift into PARK, I have to press it forward harder than usual to hear it click into place, before I can remove my ignition key. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

In my experience a slipping tranny means that the clutches are wearing down. The good thing about that is that when it goes it will be very fast the bad thing is that it's going to be costly.

Sounds to me like your linkage just needs to be adjusted. Very easy to do. 12mm combination wrench and you're set.
