Hi all,
I've got the 4.5L engine FZE-FE, yes it is a 1996 model which I though automatically made it ODBII complient, however it is only ODBI model computer after buying the scangauge II which I intended to just plug in after getting it back from a complete engine rebuild that costed me a small fortune. Now I'm broke but is another story.

From my understanding the motor is exactly the same in every way so why couldn't I update the computer to ODBII then plug into my scan gauge II.
Please help me.
Or is there anyway to cut the plug off the scangauge and manaully wire it into the ODBI computer?

All help mostly appreciated.

My 95 is obd1 and the scan gauge fits and functions perfectly ?
I;m guessing you put a 96 motor and computer in an older 93-94?
If that the case you are most likely just missing the wiring and the obd port for the scan guage.
Can you can retrieve it from the donor car ?

Did you mean ODBII not I. Being a 96 model in Australia, apparently they didn't have to be ODBII complient as yet. the year model is def a 1996 model. So really hoping that someone can help me in either buying and fitting a ODBII computer ( I can't see the difference at all motor wise ) or possibly fit somehow even if I have to cut of the plug off the scan gauge and wire it in somehow.

Technically in the us 1995 model year was still considered obd1 but has obd2 capabilities. My scanguage is plugged in right now, there is a obd port just above the interior fuse box .
I have no idea when obd2 was added on aussie models so bump for you.

It may help if you give your location. Most here assume you are talking about a US spec 80 which is fully OBDII compliant beginning in 1996 (US govt mandated), however you mention Australia so we're not 100% certain.

yes I probably should have, however I did specifically specify that my 80 series is only ODB1 and wanted to know if it is possible to make it ODB2 compliant, I can't see any difference the the motors at all, so I'm assuming that it must be only the computer it self and possibly the wiring harness.

Can anyone explain if this is true, and if it is possilble to replace the computer with an ODBII compliant one

Surely someone out there has tried to do this?

liddel - I've done a few swaps in BMW's & generally it was a reversal - we took OBD2 motors & plugged in all OBD1 sensors & blocked the extra ports OBD2 block & heads had.

We scrapped entire OBD2 harnesses & I bet the reverse would apply if you need a OBD2 port to run a Scanguage - we used OBD1 harnesses & the brainbox for the engine management, then massaged the harness to fit some of the relocated sensors.

thank you Linus, I think the big question here now is there any difference between a motor 4.5L designed for ODB1 and the same motor that is designed for ODB2 computer.
I've looked at both and I can't find a single thing different. Can anyone confirm this or know if there is something different?
FZJ-FE 4.5L Petrol Motor?

This applies to US spec rigs: They are very different, would need to change much of the EFI system, do major wiring, etc. The OBD2 system has a crank angle sensor, in the upper pan, it is trickered by a wheel on the crank, would require major motor surgery to update. The auto trans is different, is controlled by the ECU, so would need to swap to the later trans or cob a workaround. If you need OBD2, likely best/cheapest to sell the rig and buy a later model one.

Thanks, I really didn't think there would be that much difference, honestly thought the motors would be exactly the same, was thinking computer and part of the harness just for the ODB2 connector would do it.
I have a manual gearbox, don't know if that would make a difference on that part.
Thanks for your time, really appreciate it
