Hi all. I have posted a few times on the forum but have lingered and read much more. I am looking at a 1992 FJ80 from a local seller. It has 118,xxx original miles, on its second owner (as of about 10 months ago). I just drove it and everything is clean and works. Looks like the power steering pump is leaking and there is a good shimmy in the steering from 55-70 mph on the highway. Other than that it is in pretty good shape minus some rock chips and some wear on the window sills.

So, does that sound like a pretty good deal? I have more experience with 40s than 80s so I would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks!

91's and 92'are at the bottom of the 80 value scale.

Even with really low miles this one is overpriced. Probably should be closer to $3.5 to $4K, especially considering it sounds like its got a few problems.

$6.5K should get you a pretty nice 95-97 with relatively low miles and a few mods. This gets your the better engine, the face lifted interior and airbags.

Thanks.

Thanks for the insight. It is a nice clean cruiser but the price does seem a bit high. I have been thinking about it all afternoon, leaning toward passing it up, and your response is good confirmation.

I can't believe what a great community Mud is. Never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks again.

Except to those of us who love them.

I've had my 91 since 1998. Bought it with 108k miles; it's now at 270k and is still the wife's DD.

Found a *very* clean local 92 with (again!) 108k miles a couple years ago. Paid 6K to add it to the fleet and couldn't be happier. But again, this one is reeeally well taken care of, looks new inside and out, and is basically our weekend/road trip mobile.

You just need to know what it is you want and what's it's worth to you.

Welcome,

Curtis

Just to clarify: bottom of the dollar value scale

I know the 3FE is at the top of the value scale in a lot of hearts and minds:p

yup, I picked up a 92 with 130 thousand miles for $3K 6 years ago.

Even though the 3fe is a dog it is a more reliable engine than a 1fz

The 1fz is no slouch either

Having little experience with the 80s, I was surprised at how 'not fast' the 3FE is. However, it feels really solid, and my little venture off-road during the test drive in 4 low was impressive. I just can't believe how solid they are being 20 years old. Really impressive. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since the '71 FJ40 parked outside my office is 100% original with only routine maintenance performed during its life and it is 40 years old. My wife's grandpa bought it new in '71 and it has never left the family.

6500 it better suck and f@@@ you

My .02--

I bought a '91 about 3 years ago, in fantastic shape (had to replace the tires)...everything worked.

$2500

Wow. That is seriously cheap - I need to find a deal like that. I like your sig line. I have a 2006 Subaru Outback.

So what about a newer 80 or a 98-99 hundy? Assuming $5-8K what would you look for?

$5-8K will get you a nice 80.

I don't think you are going to get a good 100 series in that price range, even an early one.

Still looking for that year and model.

Your insurance company will value it at least that so maybe not so bad

Just be patient and you'll find the right 80. I looked around for about a year before I purchased my 97 LX450 with 211k miles for $6500. Mileage was high, but it was immaculate inside and out. Did minor preventative maintenance on it and will be rebuilding my front axles soon for safe measure. It runs like a top and goes everywhere.

I would definitely hold out for a 93-97. You might just luck out and find a clean 80 with factory lockers.

paid 5k for my 92 with lift and snorkeled and two sets of tires. one set on stock tacoma rims with offset for street driving (fairly new tires) and another set on baja rims with 34" mudders that were fairly new.

Every one has shared about how cheap you can find them for. I thought I would share the high end to give you a range/perspective. I picked up my 97 lx450 with 85K original miles, factory lockers and CRAZY clean in and out for $8800. I knew that was on the high end compared to others I had seen but I was willing to pay the extra because of the low miles, lockers, and being super clean. $8800 is about the top mark for any year/mileage 80 that is fully stock. $6500 for a 92 with over 100k seems high. If it had lockers then I would say it's in the $4500-5500 range on the high end. No lockers then $3500-4500. $6500 is just too high. I'm no expert on pricing, but I did spend about 9 months looking at every 80 within 1000 miles of me and those prices I gave reflect the sells that I found.

I have decided to patiently wait for a really nice 80. I have time and the longer I wait the more cash I can save :) I will not take out a car loan so if I find one today I have $6000 to spend. If I don't find one until Spring 2013 I will have closer to $8000. If anyone hears of an nice 80 anywhere out there please let me know. I am a ready and willing buyer. Again, thanks for all of the comments. My knowledge of 80s has increase exponentially in the last 24 hours!

Why not make an offer? I think $4500 wouldn't be unreasonable at all. That leaves you $2k to do some serious baselining, a lift, and an Aussie locker in the rear.
It sounds like a good, low mileage truck. I'd hate to pass something like that up, and I didn't.
1992, now with 252k miles and running like a champ.
