I searched for BEB and answered my own question - looks like it's the 1HD-T's that had the BEB problems, not the 1HD-FT.

Welcome,
I'm glad to see the person that bought this truck on the forum. I know this truck pretty well after Brent and I spent some time working out a few kinks. Others here can verify, but the reason we here on MUD hear mostly about the hdt's BEB problem is that most of the people on here can only import trucks that are 15 years old. You might want contact some of the canadians directly and ask them. G&S, Crushers, Raddcruisers, are all very good options. I have heard of BEB problems on the HDT-ft and would hate for such a nice conversion to have similar problems. Congrats.

New production 1hdt and 1hdft's are said to have updated bearings w/ the problem fixed. So I was told when purchasing a new short block from Toyota.

Are you gonna be running veg in that engine?

Hi Iron Giant and mac, thanks for the replies. I will contact some of the CAN vendors just in case Toyota did not correct the BEB problems in the later 1HD-FT's.

And yes, I am going to convert this to run on WVO (waste vegetable oil.) I currently run it on B99 (99% commercial biodiesel/1% diesel.) I've got an Alaska trip planned for next September, and plan to do the entire trip, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Alaska and back on free fuel. I'm trying to decide whether I'll upgrade to a full-floating reaf axle to handle to handle the weight of about 100 galllons of vegetable oil (my business partner's in BC, so I can refuel on the way up and once again on the way back home) or pull a trailer with 100 gallons (or more) of WVO. And in either case, I think I'm going to want an intercooler to handle the added load of the fuel and camping gear, rooftop tent, etc.

I've contacted Michael at West Coast Cruisers who has a HDJ80 with a German intercooler, and I've written to ATS and AliSport about their intercoolers, but I'm open to suggestions as to which 'cooler to use.

ditto on the intercooler - upgrade the valve body tranny and run temp gauges would be a better investment imo... long range fuel tank underbody should help to extend your range. Sounds like a great trip -congrats on the new truck.

Has no one welcomed you yet??

Craig some owners have reported beb problems with the 1HD FT in oz but not to the same extent as the 1HDT owners .
Aftermarket bearings with a tougher surface are available from ACL (an aussie company that supplies GM and Ford here)
Toyota dealers also secrety used them a few years back while the problem was sorted out;)

And congratulations on the purchase:D

1HD-FT power, bearings, axle payloads

Thanks for the replies, hks3sgtr, dieseldan and Rosco.

Woody welcomed me when I joined, and all the replies added to my sense of being welcomed -:) I will for sure consider adding the extreme valve body, plus maybe a thermostatically-controller aux. trans cooler and trans temp gauge - as well as boost and EGT gauges of course, pre-tweaking. And I'll probably replace the big end bearings with ACL's preemptively, plus run Delvac I, and possibly add bypass oil filtration.

My glovebox manual lists the total payload for the '91 axle as 900#, and the full-floater will carry 1719# - have the Toyota engineers been conservative in setting the payload of the semi-floater at 900#, do you think?

Craig

Just food for thought here. I dont know much about these motors but..

I was told by my friend in Australia that the BEB problem was a combination of the faulty bearings and machining issues with the crankshaft. I think when toyota warrantied this problem, both the crankshaft and the bearings were replaced. Something you might want to get checked out.

You sure have one sweet rig though.
