1990 VX Landcruiser HDJ81 Diesel
4.2L 1HD-T, A440-F Automatic 4sp

History:

I purchased the truck from the 2nd United States owner.
100% West Coast truck since it’s been in the USA.

The good:

LSD full floating rear axle
100% mechanical diesel injection without electronic control
100% hydraulic transmission without electronic control
Permanent CA registered diesel
Rebuilt front axle less than 50 miles ago
No rust.
5X 35”/12.50”/17 Kenda Klever tires. Less than 3k miles. Lifetime balances from Valvoline service centers. ($1500)
OEM 17 X 8, 5th gen 4runner wheels
New FZJ80 larger front brakes. New pads.
New 4X OEM door seals
New OEM rear calipers, new rear pads
New Bosch 24V starter
Air-conditioning very cold, center refrigerator works perfectly. Converted from R12 under my ownership.
OEM rebuilt CT-26 turbo
Black Mamba 9 blade exhaust turbine. Same turbine used in G-turbo’s. 1/2 the weight, instant boost. Balanced at a local shop.
EGT gauge installed.
Keyless entry, alarm, remote start. You need an alarm they’re too easy to steal otherwise.
Max CA allowable tint
Full interior sound deadening installation with the exception of the doors. I have the material to do them, just haven’t got time.
Full new carpet PAD installation, helps with heat and sound
Dash repaired and covered with suede-like synthetic. (Not alcantara)
Complete fluid change on everything, zerks greased, axles greased.
No leaks from the motor or transmission
3” Redback in frame routing exhaust system. Not available in the US ($1500)
External transmission cooler

Parts not installed:

ACL rod bearing kit and cap screws from RADD Cruiser
Oil filters
Fuel filters
USA conversion accessory belts
Inline fuel filters
Vinyl floor kit, 8 x 12 black vinyl liner for the entire floor
VW Golf MK7 heated and power seats
Great condition, gray, USA, 3rd row seats from FZJ80. All brackets and seat belts to install.
Complete FZJ80 interior. Better headliner, better pillar coverings, higher quality trim, better sun visors etc. My plan was to re-wrap the entire interior to match the dash.
Old Bosch starter that can be rebuilt.

The bad:
Center only differential lock, no front and rear
Slow wipers
The paint
The driver door has scratches
Leaking power steering gear box. ($300 new)
Center vents are loose
Driver mirror power folding function does not work.
Driver seat cloth is so-so condition.

I’m selling or trading the truck for a quad cab pickup, Tundra, F-150, or Silverado. I have too many home repair projects that have left me zero time to wrench on the landcruiser. I need something with a bed to actually haul debris.

This cruiser runs better than any I’ve been in. I’ve owned 3, and driven several others. It has the power and go of a much more modern vehicle. It’s impressive to think that its 30 years old.

We’ve done several trips locally to Big Bear, Johnson Valley OHV, Valley of the Moon etc. and off-road it is night vs. day to a gasoline cruiser.
The low spool and torque make crawler gears virtually unnecessary. It’s like cheating off-road.

This is the landcruiser you actually take out every weekend and enjoy.
I have literally worked on this truck probably 10X more than I’ve actually used it for camping and off-roading.
I’d guess we put all of 3k or less miles on it in 2 years.

What is the consensus here fellas?

Hard to peg the value with these... some 200k mile gas asking $20k it seems.
So I figured with permanent CA registration and diesel...?

Constructive feedback is welcome!

What are US conversion belts? How are these rigs easy to steal?

I just meant that the hard to find belts were converted to USA (inches) and I have spares.

They're easy to steal just from the nature of 1990s technology. A simple screwdriver pounded into the ignition tumbler and you could steal it. Obv harder with an alarm.

Price drop to $24k. Need to sell this truck one way or another.

$22k motivated seller here, need to move this to get other home repairs started!

CA emissions exempt. Clean CA diesel title waiting to sign over.

Bring me your (best) lowball offers!

you don't want to tell this crowd that, including me, we are one bunch of cheap bastards.

I don't want this to be the cheapest HDJ81 in the country but its getting there!
