A careful read of your description tells me that it is definitely your hubs that are the issue. Not uncommon. You do not have to spend big $$$ to replace the crappy electric ones. Junkyard Toyota parts from a solid front axle pickup (probably 40/60 series too) will do the job. Better than spacers too. Check out the post on this conversion in my build thread:

hey clint- thanks for the info. I think its my hubs too. I ordered some direct bolt ons, hoping they will work ok for a while. that's a nice looking rig you have. I wasn't wanting to have to do a lot to my hzj73, as I spent 2 years on my 74 fj40 fixing it up, and then sold it and got this. now, I just want to drive it and take a break. hopefully, this will fix it. thanks again.
