1989 BJ74 - Worth It?

Don't deal with any auction agent who does not supply you with the auction sheet before you decide to bid and documentation as to the actual auction price.

There all kinds of outfits who will try to sell vehicles straight from the auction. They do nothing but bid for you and then hand the vehicle over to a trading co. who arranges the export etc. They like to tack 3 to 4 grand onto the auction price per vehicle, so that about fits with this one.

Grade A means a serious accident. If you weren't told this up front, well...goodbye!

If you're buying sight-unseen anywhere you'd better ask a lot a questions and be satisfied with the answers.

actually, i can easily say this guy is not adding 3-4 grand to anything... what i am saying is that i can not see how he can do this deal at all...
the final selling price is below his cost...

Louis:

Remove the resonator, and install a 2 1/2" straight pipe where it was. I gained 3 seconds 0 to 100 kmh doing only that, with my HZJ73

I'll qualify what I said before: Grade R means a serious accident. Grade A means a less serious accident, usually just body damage.

Clocking on rebuilt vehicles is very common. This one could well be genuine though. The mileage is below average for that year and if they were going to wind it, they would usually wind it down further than 212K.

You said shipping to your door was included, which does make this a good deal if the vehicle checks out.

Let's face it, if this was a rust free HJ60 with 212,000 Kms guys would be all over it. Of course we don't yet know if this one is rust free.

Grade "A" can also be used by some auction when they are too old for them to bother grading...

Interesting, i will keep that option open, i wonder what it would be like with just a pipe and no muffler - anyone know?

Noisy in its powerband;)

I have a Lukey sports muffler on mine and I wouldnt want it any louder.

if it is a off road truck and you didn't care about noise then it would be acceptable but if you are like me and like to be able to think while you driv eit would be loud. add a turbo and it will help somewhat to kill ht enoise but to me a free flowing resonator and free flowing exhaust is very nice. i like my trucks quiet...
each to their own.

Yeah, it is Rob at jaeva.com

I bought my BJ74 for Rob @jaeve. The price was less than local or other importers at the time. It did however reflect the condtion of the truck. I have seen other cars / trucks sold by Rob and none were misrepresented. The price Rod gave you would be to Vancouver (Fraser Warfes) Once there you would be respoinsalbe for taxes, duty and port costs. Also Rob is Canadian and has been selling cars / trucks worldwide for over 12 years, generly to car dealers and importers.

very interesting...
with 12 years of experience then he should know the difference between a BJ74 and a BJ73...

quote:

I'm looking at buying a JDM BJ74, 5 speed, grey, no rust, excellent condition, but 212,000 km's. Price is CAD $6400 delivered to my door.

end quote.

this description varys quite a bit from the auction sheet translation...

hummm...

As you know given the number of trucks sold at auction and the number of actionus in Japan, it may be a different truck than you or your supplier found at auction. I'm sure the dealer would know the model as it is also on the aution sheet.

you know you could be right...
lets compare the auction shots with the ones sent to the original poster:
014441.webp
014442.webp
014443.webp

Same plate #, just differnet photos locations. BJ73, 3400 CC motor. it appears even dealers make mistakes.

hummm, dealers make mistakes...
that is true but what is a lie and what is a mistake...

lets take a look, shall we compare the original post with what this truck really is?

the post said "excellent shape", is it?

it has been in an accident, front drivers fender (XX)
it has a poor paint job on the fender and is fading (H)
it has a good size dent between the drivers door and the fender (B2)
good size scratches on the roof (A2)
interior is rough ('C')
tires are bald (20%)
no rear bumper at all
different grill
extended shackels front and rear
painted fiberglass roof
and from the looks of the position of the hood it needed a boost to come inside for the photos...

far from excellent in my books.

oh and the most important is the BJ74 but it is a BJ73...

then we have you saying that this guy, who provided your truck, has been in business for 12 years but in the past you said 5 years...

I've had 2 different guys call me - one from ontario - and one from alberta, both had 2 different guys (curbsiders) trying to pass off bj73's as bj74's at "excellent" prices - I informed both guys to walk away - no idea if they did.

Dumb question:
But what are the major differences between BJ73 (1HZ?) and BJ74 (13B-T)'s?
I know the engine is different, and the front axle (I think).
Is the 73 coils or leaf? I know the 74 is leaf.

Did they have the same options?

Thanks,
Nick
