Im looking into purchasing a well taken care of 62. The engine is original, but the transmission has been rebuilt. Absolutely no rust and no leaks. It is out of state so I'm going to have someone look at it. What should I have the mechanic check for? The rig had 266k on it and runs without any hiccups.

I am new too, did alot of searching and found a 1988 in NC, tiny bit of rust that i am going to cut out and take care of. 130k on engine, original everything works. inside is in good shape, cracked dash, but that ads character. I finally settled on 6300$ and then had a local mechanic in Wilmington look at it 1st Quality Imports.
I looked for original owner, low miles, Old timer, no mods, good alignment, good car fax, and minimal to no rust. Lastly, I asked the mechanic and his wife "would you buy it" and his reply was "if i was in the market for a land cruiser".

good luck.

see if you can get a "land cruiser" mechanic/specialist to check it out for you, there should be a lot of them since its in CA. try the mechanic listed by state thread in the sticky section above. Or maybe someone here on mud could look for you, these guys/gals are quite knowledgable. Good luck with your probable purchase :)

$3k seems about right. If it's in the Bay area? I can look at it, It would just cost you gas and lunch.

;)

California and probably around $3-3500. What are typical prices for clean higher mile rigs?

I'm having a hard time buying a rig with 266k on the clock. It seems to have really been well taken care of, no rust or leaks at all, but that is just high mileage. I know these trucks will go past 400k but If you were me would you hold off for one with lower miles or will a good truck at 266 still treat me right for years to come?

I would totally pay for gas and lunch if you could check it out for me. The only problem is I need to get it checked out on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Could you swing that? It's in Oakland.

Let me know if that would be a possibility. Thanks!

You should message me your #. But I think I can do it like 3~4pm Monday.

Now I wont be doing a compression check, but I'll do what I did when I bought mine. listen, look, feel and smell. Then give you my advice(but no guarantees).

;)
