Ok - what does "Locked" mean?

When I say locked, I refer to front and rear (factory) diff lockers.
This is a very desierable and sought after option.
I would not buy a import cruiser without it, and if I did it I would not pay as much.

I use both my lockers. If I did not have them I would want to pony up the money for some ARB's. Now that I have had them, it would be very hard going back.

Cheers,
Nick

i have run lockers frotn and rear, rear only and open front and rear...
if you can not drive then lockers are a great option...if you can drive then you don't need them...
i find it more challenging without BUT if i had a choice between a locker equiped unit and an open unit of the same caliber then i would take the one with lockers...(resale value)
cheers

Keep in mind folks, its cold up here and salt is used alot. Good condition frame and body will make it high value. Price for LC in Canada is totally different then the US. From what i've seen surfing the net for the last 6 month.

you should see my montero right not, it is covered with 1/16" of salt all around up to mid height of the doors. Very nasty stuff.

All cruisers i've seen lately are in so bad shape they're only hope is to become donor for some drive train parts.

Since Canada has 15 years rules for importing no doubt i'd would import one from south USA.

And west coast Canada is warmer then east coast, mostlikely the reason you hear more about people with cruisers from BC.

Sorry Wayne, I have to disagree with this.
Lots of the time this is true, but lots its not.

A good driver unlocked can go alot of places.
But that same driver with lockers can go further.

But (as a whole) I do agree that a good driver unlocked, can go further than a bad driver locked.

Cheers,
N.

well then a guess a bit of a challenge has been tabled...

so how about next weekend you come up with your locked BJ74 and i will run my PZJ70 with the rear locker removed...
better yet i will run my wife's LJ78... that should make it fair...

sound like fun?

How do I recognize "front and rear factory diff lockers?"

And, yes, I will let you know what I get for the bj70.

Thanks for all the advice. Peter

Yeah, wayne, that sounds like a blast.
But the next few weeks are going to be pretty full.
Lots of work to do at work and at home.
How about sometime April (ish)? (or may if that works better. But I am already busy May Long)
Does that work for you?

Maybe we can get a group together.

Cheers,
Nick

It will have handles for the lockers that look like this. And lights in the dash board.
See pics below.

Cheers,
Nick

yep, give me a weeks notice and we can go try out your lockers...
Ficher East run is coming up, it is a s*** show where you cover about 10 km in 10 hours, nasty ruts, mud and more ruts and mud...
i will run the PZ and you can bring your fully locked 74...
(oh, make sure you have a attachment point front and rear. you will need them)
cheers

Sounds like fun.
What weekend is it?

I don't have front tow hooks yet, but I was planning on making some.

Cheers,
N.

pinto hitch rear (princess auto cheap and direct bolt on)
stock hooks into the frame mounting points front...(princes auto $5 each) put one on each side

it would be fun hooking up with you.

$5 bucks. Sounds good.
I'll take a few of those.
Not worth by time to build them for that much.

Maybe I could come out a friday night.
Get those hooks on, and then head somewhere on the weekend.

What weekend where you thinking?

Cheers,
N.

at the next Land Cruiser meeting i will ask when the Mclain Creek s*** Show is and you can attend that one...it is mostly for the big boys but us stockers can have fun as well...

Make sure that this head to head battle is fair:

Same type/style/modded truck (read same lift, tires, suspension, etc)

Then have one locked and one unlocked.

Anything else is simply posturing...

Then try straight mud runs, sidehills, flexy tank traps, rocks, snow, etc...

Unlocked will do better in some situations, locked will do better in others. A wise driver will try it all, learn what works in what situations, and what does not. Then will select the "most" correct setting (gear, locked/unlocked) for the situation ahead. This of course does not ensure ones getting through. Of course, not near having tried it all...I have tonnes to learn.

Wayne, if you are saying if one knows how to drive an unlocked truck it can go many places (and many people think this is the best way to learn to drive...then get lockers) locked trucks go...you are correct, but not always!

NickW, if you are saying all things being equal (vehicle, terrain, driver) a locked vehicle will go deeper...then you are correct most of the time, but not always! (slippery sidehills being one where unlocked may be better).

Of course if it is simply a friendly challenge to get the trucks out, have fun, get stuck, hoot holler and learn...then have at r...

:-)

of course Greg,
when i go for a challenge it is always for fun... if it gets to competive and the tetestrone gets to high then i walk away...
life is too short not to have some fun.

lockers and side hill in snow or mud can be scary. open diffs on uneven ground is a real challenge. they all have their advantages and disadvantages...

a good driver can pilot an open diffed unit into some pretty impressive manouvers (ever watch Bruce Lowen pilot a stock truck?? WOW!!)
and a locked truck makes a crappy driver look good...

I am all with you there.
It's about having fun.
We are not measuring body parts so to speak....

I also agree that wheeling open is fun and challenging.
And that lockers can make a bad driver look good.
In the end, I still enjoy having them (a lot).

Things are melting fast in town around here.
I wonder how things will be mid Arpil/May.
There is still alot of snow up there.

Cheers,
N.
