Hello - I am paying off my LC by importing a couple others to sell. I have coming from Japan a 1985 BJ70 - 45,000 kms, Right Hand Drive, great shape, 5-speed, factory winch (it looks like), no rust, 3B engine. This unit is NOT available for export into the States. Sorry...

I have not laid eyes on it, and I am not certain of the price yet. What the market will bear, I guess.

What should the price range be? I am thinking 15-18,000 range CDN. Any thoughts on what I should be asking will be appreciated. You are more experienced that I.

I am in Southern Alberta, an hour out of Waterton National Park.

If the milage were true it would fetch 10K, the last two vehicles with low K I inspected were definitely not true miles and told the customers not too buy either unit.

l just love threads like this...
question:
do you have any conformation that the unit is an actual 45,000km?
what is the REAL condition of the body and interior?
did you get it inspected before you bought?
are you going to make sure it is completely DOT/SAE compliant?
are you offering a warranty with the unit?
is it going to be registered and inspected before you sell it?
are you upgrading the stereo?
are you replacing the batteries and giving it a complete refreshing?
are you changing out he fluids?
if the tires have cracks or are worn are you replacing them?

if you are going after the big bucks then the truck has to be imaculate...

the idea that it is worth $10,000 is an insult, the CDM with 300,000 and rusted are asking $7500.

final note:
IF YOU ARE GOING TO INVEST MONEY BE ABLE TO LOOSE IT.

cheers

I feel the market will bear certain prices for rigs, depends on many things.

A BJ70 Canadian or Japanese rig to me with 45K means it was not driven and possibly sat for many months on ends which is not always a good thing.

Its not like one of these pops up once a year, seems like a few a year and the age of the vehicle does not make it collector by any means.

This is obviouly biased but I would prefer a pristin 1965 LV over any JDM low milage rig. And yes I may have dreams of ruining the authentisity of the rig by dropping in a nice clean yota diesel.

Rob,
you are a newbie when it comes to importing and also when it comes to high end units.
a 1966 45LV is worth good money to the right individual. to most it is an "old truck" and worth scrap metal prices but to the right individual it can be worth huge coin.

a 1985 BJ70 with zero rust and no fawk up bodywork, low km will be worth a fortune to the right person.

the idea that a unit has sat for a long time does not make it any more of a problem than one that was driven daily. i sold a 1989 JDM Corolla with 1,800 km to a gent 2 years ago. he now has 60,000 km on it and ZERO issues. do not try and tell me it was a roll back either the milage was confirmed and the body showed it.

if he wants to flip it quickly then sell it for less, if he is willing to sit on it for possibly a LONG time he can ask for the full monty.

that unit will be eligible for importation to the states in just a couple years and contrary to what many beleive the market is huge in the states for the 70 series rigs. one with this kind of milage will fetch excellent coin there.

yes, the steering wheel is on the oposite side but for many that is a cool factor not a detriment.

BTW Peter, curbing a couple vehicles is ILLEGAL in Alberta...with the crack down going on you might want to reconsider your actions...

I think you're going to have a hard time getting 17K from anyone who knows about Outback or Luxury, because for a similar amount, a person could get a certified and authenticated low k unit. With either of those operations you are dealing with a known entity offering support, presales inspection and service. Buying from a curber, it's huge risk and no backup.

Martin, my boys ar certainy moist.

Please explain...

You guys certainly have it tough, I paid $4000 nz for my 85 70series swb, it has ome springs and nitro charger shocks, 33 inch tyres that works out to be about $3200CDN.;)
$17k for a 70 seems unbeleivable:doh:

Hey Guys,

Long time no post.
Things don't seem to change to much.... :)

Everyone here has vaiid points.
Cruisers fetch a high price. Its sad for buyers.
I wish I could of gotten mine $3200! :)

That being said, what are they worth?
If people are getting $5, $6 and $7K for rusty high millage ones, a clean one is certainly worth more. I would be apprehensive of the millage on any JDM, certainly something low like 45K. For a non turbo, non locked, base truck, I would think $10-12ish. Start adding things and the price can go up.

As a side note, I am thinking about selling mine. Its locked and loaded and has pretty much everything you could ever want. If I got $16K I would be happy. So there is no way a base BJ70 is going to fetch that much.

Anyways, that is my 2 cents.

Cheers,
N.

To expand on my point, for the same kind of money, or very close, someone could buy an HDJ81 from Outback or possibly luxury (maybe a few more $ for one of their premium units with very low k's) with a full service pack and support and service. I'm sure there might be someone out there willing to pay 18K for a supposed 45K JDM from a curber but educated buyers would not be easy to sell to with that scenario.

Ok - what does "Locked" mean?

BTW - I trust my man in Tokyo about the truth of the 45,000 kms. This is the eighth vehicle I have bought through him - second TLC. Minis, a nissan fairlady, and a Benz, all checked out well, plus my lj78 - only 64K when I got it.

18K is pretty high, I think 12-15 is more like it...it's what the market will bear...does anyone here really think a Pontiac GTO is "worth" $70,000USD?...just saw one sell on Barrett's for that...yikes

It would be interesting to hear from the original poster (for whom I meant no disrespect) what he is actually able to sell this vehicle for - if he imports it. I wish him luck. As Wayne said, it's a risky business.
