19 years ago my family left the motherland of cruisers and moved from Australia to NJ. Now nearly 2 decades later, my family has all left and live back in Australia/Singapore. Given my chosen career that is focused in NYC, my wife's family living nearby and many other established roots, I am well and truly entrenched here in the North East.

Growing up I always loved the diesel cruisers, 40's, 60's, 70's etc. After moving to the states and realizing my favorite cruisers were not available here, the desire to own one grew 10 fold. In 1999 my family picked up a 96 80 series, it was never built it up and was the family hauler, we enjoyed many trips and fond memories right up until rust eventually took hold and we parted ways with the old girl.

In Feb 2014 I picked up my 97 down in NC which turned into a bit of an adventure requiring a surprise personal Onur parts delivery and subsequent Ramada Inn parking lot axle rebuild...good times. 2 plus years later and that 80 has been reborn completely The Dirty Koala.

Throughout all this time I have always had a passion for the 40's but the stars have never aligned at the right time...until now. A couple months ago a friend informed me of a sweet 1982 BJ42 that was available, I worked out a deal and then proceeded to sell my built and very clean 2nd Gen 24V Ram to fund the purchase.

I am flying out to CO in a couple weeks to pickup the cruiser and drive it back home to NJ. My intended route right now is to cruise along Rt 80 as it's the most direct route. That said, given life is definitely going to be lived in the slow lane on this adventure, I am open to taking a more scenic route if there are places that I really should plan on visiting.

To keep this slightly tech, I plan to carry new belts, hoses and voltage regulator for the 3B with me just in case. After getting home I have plans to swap out the 4 speed for an H55F, get a turbo from Doug, piece together an OEM power steering setup, and if possible pull together an A/C setup.

For those in the know, what recommendations do you have for adjustments to my route and places I must/should see. I am looking forward to this pending adventure.

If you are anywhere near telluride and since you are a friend of beno's, welcome at my place. If you need anything just holler. Beno has my contact info if you need it.

Drop down to Hwy 50 east through Pueblo. continue on to Kansas through Garden City and Dodge City, KS. You can continue on Hwy 50 to Wichita, KS. From there, you can pick many different routes available. I would continue on through Bowling Green, Missouri. Stay south of Indianapolis and you should be fine. I love taking back routes. there are always interesting people to meet and great views.

Thank you for the kind offer. Hopefully I won't need assistance, but I will reach out if I do. Cheers.

I am going to take a look at this route, the for the suggestions.

If you do run across 80, it would be a quick and direct route , albeit traffic in spots can get crazy at times . I'm 10 miles north of the Interstate 80 corridor at MM56/Princeton and 16 miles south of RT.30 at Dixon in Illinois .
If you stick to RT. 30 or RT.6 all the way across it's going to be a lot of little towns , plenty of stop n go if you like that sort of thing .

Either way, post up your route - there are plenty of us with parts/facilities for repairs if the need arises...

Thanks Sarge. Over the next week or so I will establish my planned route and post up here. I'm not too worried about the drive as the truck is in great condition and the history is well known...but you never know what surprises you may run into.

Pounding something that old down the highway for that distance will crop up a list of things never considered - good idea to change all fluids before leaving and at least carry the basic spares and a decent quantity of each fluid needed . Biggest hurdle is not getting in a hurry...

Yes, fluid change and basic spares will be accounted for.

Congratulations! She's beautiful. As you may know, overheating and under oiling kill the 3b. Be certain about you water pump and thermostat, if not carry a spare. Good luck, enjoy the ride!
Water pump and thermostat were replaced about a year ago, so they should be good...but may not hurt to have a spare. I will be carrying belts, hoses, voltage regulator and fluids with me.

Nice truck. I'll be waiting to see what you do about power steering. I'm all over the place trying to figure out which direction to take.

Thank's Cim, I plan to go with the OEM PS steering if I can peice it altogether. If you don't mind making some modifications to your BJ40, the 60 series setup is the most functionalikely in my opinion.

Nice 42! My 82 with 4 speed likes to cruiser around 50mph so take that into consideration. Anything over that and the rpms are up there. That looks like a really nice rig. I'd just take a tool set, a fan belt and some fluids and drive it.

Yeah, I am expecting to be cruising at 50 - 60 max. Belts, hoses and fluids will be along for the ride.

Whatever route you take, I truly hope you take lots of pictures and post everyday along your route. I am really enjoying the travelogue that Hecrod is writing in his travels across this wide country. This kind of thread with pictures is probably the only way I will get to see so many parts of the USA and Canada, and I am really enjoying my "travels". Especially since there is a 40 in the mix.
