I'm looking at my a 1980 Toyota 4wd short bed pickup fuel tank, capacity 13.7 gallons, which is unobtanium new.

I've been comparing it to the 1986, 2wd, short bed carburated fuel tank that's also 13.7 gallons, which is readily available.

They look identical to me. I have been told the 86 17gal longbed tank will fit, if you hammer on a few places to clear the underside of the bed. So this seems like a reasonable bet.

Before I blow $150 to $200, to find out, I figured I'd ask here, does anyone know the differences between the 3 shortbed 13.7gal tank*(80 vs 86)?

Also for teh new tank, I can get it from dorman, or AM Autoparts, what's the difference, other than $50?

Thanks,

I've got the slightly cheaper Dorman version coming, and in a few weeks I hope to have them side by side and be able to tell you if this
will swap in place of the OEM tank.

I did this already with my 82 long bed.
I compared the tanks to mine and went with the one that looked closest to mine. I ended up with an 87 long bed tank that is 19 gallons. The tanks fit with very minimal adjustments. I did have to hammer the bottom of the bed reinforcement to make it fit due to the added depth the tank has due to the extra 5 gallons. it was minimal effort to replace mine. IT was slightly off where it bolts on to the frame of the truck but I elongated the holes a few millimeters and the bolst were able to fit just fine.
On my truck the skid plate will have to be fabbed with an additional 3 inches. again, due to the added depth due to the extra gallons.

They look identical to me
