Differences between a 1982 fj40 frame an a 1980? Can I swap an 1980 for an 1982? Thanks, MIke

Bump.

I believe so... Both have fuel tanks under tub, right?

Someone must know for certain.

I thought this would be the case, just wanted feedback from the experts. Can anybody in Austin go buy and look at the frame for me and see if its ok? Thanks MIke

The '79-'83 frames are exactly the same -

Not quite true. In 8/80 there were s few changes. I believe the fixed nuts for the skid plate moved. The rear motor mounts were gone. There are fixed
nuts further back for a crossmember instead. Springs also changed so not sure if the spring mounts are the same.

Need more input. So has anyone used an earilier frame like a 1980 for a 1982? What changes did you make? Thanks, MIke

He said it was an early frame. Need someone in Austin to look at it for me but the guys I know are at the Razorback Ramble. MIke

The tranfer case changed in 8/80 from a one piece to the spline transfer case. At that time the rear motor mounts were no longer attached to the bell housing instead it uses a crossmember under the transmission. Because of crossmember the skid plate changed. The springs perchs changed at the same time.

No they're not.

The 79-80 frames have the smaller (earlier) sized spring bushing holes and the rear tranny crossmember (no bellhousing mounts like the earlier models).

Not true; there would still be mount provisions on the frame for the rear engine/drive train mounts like the earlier models. This did not change until 08/80 when the rear drive train support moved under the transmission, and Toyota stopped using the flywheel housing mounts to the frame.

So I have to grind off the bushing cylinders and go larger. What else? Mike

You might want to e-mail Cruiser Solutions. We bought a March 1980 with an 83 tub / cowl on it that they built up. Good luck

I'm thinking you will be fine. The 79 have smaller holes on the frame for your springs but I'm not sure what month they changed on the 80 frame. My guess is you just have to change bushing and mybe the springs if you want to upgrade. Any spring vendor can tell this info. If I were you I would get the vin number off the fram and take it to the Toyota parts counter and they will be able to identify what month and year the doner frame is and may be able to tell if it will work. My guess is you can make it work.

I want to put our 1 year old OMEs from our 1982 on the frame with all other 1982 parts. MIke

Man that sucks. I know the bushing sizes change but the bolt that holds them stay the same size. Find out if the hole on the spring is the same for both years. Probably not but any case you can you use different bushing for the frame portion(1980) and used different bushing for the springs (1982).

" the bolt that holds them " What bolt?

07/80 and earlier 40 series shackles and spring pins are 15mm diamater.

08/80 and later 40 series shackles and spring pins are 18mm diamter.

Poser, what would you use to get the 18mm diameter. SAE rolled stock? MIke

I would find bushings that have the correct od and id, or, I would have them made.
