Hello Craigslist! Please read the entire ad as I will try my best to give an accurate description and answer questions!
I am the third owner of this cruiser that I named Penny. She was originally purchased in Northern California and was purchased by a man in Kelseyville CA in 1988. He drove the cruiser as a fun rig until 2000 when he parked it. She sat for 23 years until I purchased her as a winter project at the beginning of the year.
For starters, this cruiser is very original minus the factory smog system that was removed. I did Not keep any of the smog equipment as I wasn’t expecting to be selling anytime soon…. The body is very solid with the exception of driver footwell and some on the passenger side where the factory mats and insulation entrapped moisture and rusted through while sitting. I have tried to include pictures showing this. These sections are available online and would be very fixable with some basic welding skills. I wire brushed the rust and used rust stop flat black in those areas and cut rubber mats to cover. Otherwise this rig is very solid with very little rust. Some surface rust underneath but no rot or cancer etc. this would be an ideal candidate for a full restoration, or looks amazing as it currently sits. Other than the footwells and under the back mat, I have not touched the body. No paint to try to cover or hide anything. It is as it was when it rolled off the showroom floor.
I have obviously out several thousands into parts alone as I went through this rig to get her back on the road. A basic list of some of that is as follows:
Brand new Weber carb with adapter kit and custom 9” air filter
All new brakes and hydraulics, factory disc fronts, drums rear
New tires and factory rims imported from Japan (not period correct, but look awesome)
New seats, smittybuilt for a jeep. But fit well on factory sliders with minor modification
All new fluids
New fuel pump, water pump, fan clutch, alternator, fan belt
I’m sure there are lots of little details missing. It all came back to life well and most all of the factory options work including gauges, electronics, etc.
The odometer stopped working while I was driving it. The thousandth digit was apparently stuck and when it tried to roll over to 9k, it must have stripped or broken a little gear in the system. So it is stuck at 08999 miles. Speedometer still works perfect. Volt meter does not work although new alternator is charging correctly
At the time of post, it does need the driver side door handle replaced. I have the part, I have not yet removed the door panel to replace the handle. It can still be opened, but is missing a big piece of the handle. New pet included and I will gladly replace it if that is a deal breaker! Additionally, the passenger window is missing and I have not tracked a new one down yet.
Fires right up and runs/drives well. Some slight ticking from the engine but valves were all correctly adjusted and compression was 125-130 across all six cylinders. Transmission shifts fantastic and does not come out of any gears on deceleration. Although I can’t prove it, I firmly believe the odmometer only rolled over once and she probably has 108k original miles.
I’m sure there will be more little things to do as she is continued to be driven. I have personally put around 500 miles since getting her back on the road. Definitely not a show car, but an amazing original example of a later model 40 and she turns heads and gets lots of good comments.
