Rebuilding my solid transfer case 1978 4 speed

upon reassembly of the high and low gear and the front cone I seem to still have 1/8” of in and out play on rear drive shaft. This doesn’t seem right..,

will this play be removed with the installation of the rear housing and or perhaps a bearing isn’t seated ?

any thoughts on this?

thanks

Do you have the FSM? There is a clear procedure on setting the bearing preload on the t-case output shaft, sounds like you need some shims, a lot of shims of the play really is that much.

Yeah. It just seems too much.

See this video clip…showing issue

The rear bearing retainer sets the preload on the output shaft. you will have excessive play until you tighten the bolts on the speedometer housing.

Sounds good
Insure hope so

100% correct
