Current Rig: 1978 FJ40 2F engine

What is the model number of the Weber carburetor that will run with my year FJ40? I cannot seem to find any and am looking for both the model number and a source if anyone has one.

Any other recommendations on carbs is welcome other than OEM. That's outside my price range for now. Thanks.

unless you have headers or a massive heat shield for the carb, you will be forever suffering from float-bowl boil-out of fuel-even a carb fan will not work

I do have ceramic coated headers. Will this abate the boil out? Right now I have an Empi Weber reproduction carb on and it's a POS.

the repo weber is likely better than the original.
seriously i was a weber fanboy for entirely too long.
cityracer's japanese repo of the aisan non usa carb would be the way to go.

Do you have to pass emissions tests where you live?

Do you have the OEM throttle linkage parts or has it been changed over to a cable from pedal to carb?

No emissions tests where I live. I'm pretty sure it's cable from pedal to carb. I honestly never paid close attention.

The other option would be to call Mark’s Offroad. He builds bionic Japanese carbs using vintage OEM Aisan components. Sure it’ll cost a bit more up front, but you’ll have piece of mind that you bolted a flawless carb on your manifold. A snorty carb is a good investment. Pinch pennies in other area’s.

If your rig has been switched over to a throttle cable, you might ask Mark about a 70-73 Aisan. Those years accept a cable and have mechanical secondaries.

Depending on what aftermarket setup you have, you may also need to purchase:

manifold studs

carb insulator

stock air cleaner

Rod linkage

steel fuel and return lines.

These are the 'hidden' costs of returning to stock that some folks forget to consider when 'doing the math.' Hth

Best

Mark A.

Darrin, the carb you posted for sale in the fs section, even though it is marked as a 78 carb, appears to be of the 73-74 vintage, based on the return line configuration it has [like cabron's 74 I just rebuilt]

Based on that pic, I would change almost everything I put in the first post and say that with minor modifications it could definitely be made to work on your 70.

First and easiest thing to do would be to just cap off the return line [the one on the top of the air horn] and put it on the truck and see if it will even run. Then, if it runs ok, look at the linkages on the primary throttle shaft and consider what it will take to swap them over.

If the carb doesn't work well, or if swapping the linkage worries you about breaking anything else, you can send both to me and I will build you one good carb out of the pair using the best parts from both.

The carb on my 68 is actually just such a composite: part '72, part '73, part '74.;)

I'll chime in and tell you, hands down THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE DONE TO THE MOTOR TO DATE. Smooth idle, easily sits at factory specs, cold starts and hot starts are that of a new car. Even my master tech tht turns wrenches for me when it's 15' here was highly impressed at Marks workmanship

Yeap or if you're feeling pretty frisky, the new oem version....which is what soured my relationship with the weber.

Do you have a link to the new OEM version?

Are you running the stock air cleaner? Linkage? Insulator? Converting and converting back often require
a lot more in 'hidden ' costs than just a carb.

But there's always enough money to do it over again, right?

38/38 Weber Carb Kit for Land Cruiser - JTOutfitters <weber I run on a '77 engine
Weber Carburetor Intake Manifold Adapter Toyota Land Cruiser 1F 2F FJ40 FJ60 1PC - JTOutfitters <"adapter" I got but don't really need iirc.

You can choose a linkage or wire connection, I have a linkage and it worked out fine.
Also switched to electric choke, and do not miss the manual at all.

I have an electric choke as well. Is this the setup you currently run on your FJ40? The Weber links you sent me from JT Outfitters I mean. BTW...I bought the non-US distributor from JT Outfitters. Great product.

Yes this is what I've been running 2 years now. No problems as a DD I have aftermarket headers if that makes a difference.
