Hey all, I've been whacking my head against the all trying to get my smog pump pulley to align with the back of my water pump and crank shaft pulley... I am using the incorrect pulley currently and have tried everything to no avail, it keeps aligning perfectly with the outer groove, which is where my alternator aligns. Anyone have a 1977 smog pump pulley?

Thank you!

So many pumps between 75-78 have been replaced over the years that you should specify if yours is the ‘shaft type’ with the reverse thread nut, or the three-bolt variety.

FWIW, the pump should align with your inboard pulley. So if your pulley holds the correct width belt, you should probably be looking elsewhere for your solution.

Perhaps, it seems like the correct bracket from other photos - but here it is - you can see it down below on the right.

I believe mine is original on the car (Feb 76 to July 80 was the same, Fed or Cal), if you want we can compare the length of them

I can also compare my pump to yours, length-wise, but I bought it so it’s not original. It does have the sticker on it so I can verify the part number.

Its been on our farm since I was a kid and we've had lots of mechanics over the years, so unfortunately I don't know if the part was swapped. We did have another '74 fj40 so perhaps it came from that one. I'll see if I can get the measurements - I'm out of town at the moment! Thank you avicenna!

Actually my mistake, 72 to 76 was the same as well. 79 to 80 was Cal specific.

I’m curious what the shaft type and the three bolt type look like .

This is a shaft style pump with the reverse threads nut as @65swb45. Mark outlines above

Not 💯 % sure if this is the absolute period correct yellow zinc gold plated bracket for it but the PIVoT shoe fits

Rotates properly ,this was a new era take off at the time and a preserved unicorn FJ40 smog pump in every way

Let me know if it or I can further help here in any way

Thanks Mark and Matt, always learning something new from your posts. Is there a difference between the pump above (listed for 73 to 75) and the pump with part number 17610-61010 for ‘77?

The bracket Matt posted the pic of is the 73-74 bracket. The offset holes match the forward engine hook on the cylinder head.
The earlier air pump pulleys also used a narrower belt, and a corresponding offset in the pulley.

It sounds like @corcel created his own problem by redrilling a non-corresponding pulley. 🤔

Thanks Mark, yes I also just realized by looking at my ‘77 2F engine that you cannot really install the wrong bracket from earlier years as the holes won’t line up to the block, so his bracket most likely is the right one.
