I recently purchased a 1974 FJ40 form a man in Colorado. He had already done alot of the restore. I just need to get the body parts painted and put everthing back together. I have the title and it is a 1974 model. I foung the shift knob and it is a 3 speed. Everything I have read online says that 1974 is the year the vehicle went to a 4 speed manual transmission on the floor. Can anybody enlighten me on this?

They did...in 1974.
The 74s produced during the the 1973 calendar year...Sept, oct,nov and dec where still built with the 3spd.

What does the vin tag say for the build date?...incorrectly dated titles are not uncommon.

I have parted out Jan and feb of 74 trucks that had the three speed trans and the larger 4 speed u joints and flange end in the drive shafts...

Find interesting couldn't find anything online about early 74s having a three speed. Numerous threads here have had that information.

Thanks evidently you are correct. I found the tag it was manufactured in November 1973.

I was just looking on the Internet. Now that I’ve looked on the forum here I do see that it wasn’t standard to have the four-speed until 1975 it looks like. Thanks for the reply.
