I'm looking for an exhaust system for my '72 40.
I see the parts are available online from Toyota parts sites if I search by specific numbers but don't see anywhere to buy the whole system as a kit.

Can someone point me towards a diagram that I can use to decipher the list below. I have some of the brackets and don't think I need to buy all of it. The body is off the frame and I figure it will be easiest to put it in now but driving it to a muffler shop is not an option.

Thanks.

1. If you do a search on eBay, there is a vendor that sells a bundled OEM exhaust package for FJ40s. Search for "FJ40 exhaust."

2. The Specter Off-Road web site has diagrams of the exhaust.

3. The ToyoDIY website also has diagrams of all the parts and the part numbers.

4. If you search hard enough, several Toyota dealers that sell OEM parts have the factory diagrams posted on their web sites as well.

Hope this helps.

I am interested in a stock '72 exhaust setup as well. Can anyone tell me, does the stock exhaust run above or below the skid plate? The PO added headers which I don't mind, however the rest of the installation runs about an inch below the floorboard. It gets incredibly hot!
As I see it, I could still be above the skid plate, AND a couple inches away from the floorboard.

Thoughts and/or pictures please. Much appreciated.

My '73 runs above the skidplate. It's all stock and the plate actually seems to have a slight cut-out on the front edge to accomodate the pipe. I can get a picture later this afternoon if you really need one.

That would be really helpful, thanks!

I thought I had read somewhere that the stock routing was below the skid plate, but that seams strange.

Thank you all very much.
There seem to be a few more parts on the list above than in any diagram I can find.
The SOR diagram is good but unfortunately does not reference Toyota part numbers or use the same descriptions.
I think I'll go ahead and buy the main pieces, front pipe, muffler & tail pipe.

It looks like the stock setup would include a heat shield over the top of the muffler, "Insulator, Exhaust pipe heat #1??" In the engine compartment it also looks like there should be a heat shield for the 2 oil lines that wrap around the down pipe.

Can anyone tell me how many & where any heat shields thee should be? I can make these out of stainless and spend the money on something else.

Thank you

another clue

Here is a diagram for an F engine FJ55 that identifies most of the exhaust parts for the 40 shown on the list above with pictures and Toyota part numbers. # 17420 the extra middle length of pipe is not needed for the 40.
I'm going to place an order.
Millardo, I'll let you know how it works out.

Wow Cleg that's a great diagram, good find and thanks for posting!

I might keep my header, eliminate section 17410 as the header flange to exhaust pipe orientation is different, thus having a muffler shop make that section. Then be stock from the muffler back. You'll have to let me know if that stock setup puts the exhaust pipe above the skid plate, or below.

When do you plan to install? Is it designed in a way to clamp together? No welding?

a ceramic coated header will not get as hot - just sayin'

The stock exhaust is all clamped together - no welding needed.

72 FJ40 exhaust

And in my back yard, resting, is a complete exhaust system, from head pipe, muffler, to tail pipe. I installed new, in about '96, then in about 2000, removed it when I installed a 3 -> 2 -> 1 header with a complete 2 1/4 system. The original configuration placed the pipe below the skid plate, but I had the new system put above the skid plate. The original system used 2 pipe clamps to join the head pipe to the muffler, and a clamp for the muffler to the tail pipe. Both muffler and tail pipe are aluminized steel, while the head or exhaust pipe was only steel. The system is completely serviceable, with only surface rust on the head pipe, per photos. Availabel? Of course.

I believe that skid plate was cut like that. Toyota would have had round cut-outs for each of the shaft and pipe and the pipe would not (should not) touch the skid plate. There should be 1/4" to 1/2" clearance. Frame too.

Update & bad news:
Got the parts that I could still get from Toyota per the list in the 1st post but the muffler 17510-60070 does not fit the exhaust pipe 17401-60041. The exhaust pipe is 2.00" and the inlet on the muffler is 1.70". Toyota stickers on the parts identify them as what is in the list. Exhaust pipe 17401-60041 fits the F manifold and appears to be the correct part.

What did you end up doing about the difference in dimensions? I was about to order the P/N 17510-60070 muffler for my 1972.
