The hydraulic part will work with either, but the pushrod must be compatible with the clutch fork.

Okay, so let me get this straight. I currently have a '71 FJ40 with a 3 on the tree J30 trans and transfer case. If I wanted to mount an H42 with the 4 speed transfer case already attached to it (with linkages, shifter, etc) all I would need to do is get the 4 speed bellhousing and all of the original clutch, flywheel, shift fork, pressure plate, slave cylinder, etc would fit and work? Or are there other parts I would need? I understand that I will need to get the driveshafts lengthened / shortened.

Correct, as well as cutting two holes in your transmission tunnel.

That being said, the later flywheel and clutch setup is a lot lighter and smoother.
all the parts are available new besides the flywheel and bellhousing.

Yeah the trans tunnel is rusted away and will be replaced anyway, so it isn't much of an issue. Thank you!

@cruisermatt makes an excellent point regarding the obsolete early components. Early Forks and TO bearing hubs are NLA, so it’s best to make absolutely sure yours are reusable before investing in a replacement clutch kit.

Does it matter what side the slave cylinder is on? Looks like BTB has passenger side slave cylinder mount bellhousings, but the 71 with the j30 trans has it mounted on the driver side. Other than making a new slave cylinder line to go to the other side, is there any difference or issue?

ā€˜74 4 speed came on the drivers side. In ā€˜75 (I believe) the slave was moved to the passenger side.

And the clutch fork pivot

Can you not take the clutch fork pivot from the 3 speed bellhousing and move it to the 4 speed?
I believe that they are different lengths. Or heights, depending how you look at them.

They are different, the pre 75 (ā€œ3-speedā€ ) version is longer I think.

the 75-79 bellhousings are drilled for both locations but the 80-84 bellhousings are not.

Last week when I had them all spread out would have been a good day to confirm…
Maybe if you zoom in.

How much are you wanting for a 4 speed bellhousing with the sheet metal bottom plate?
