1970 FJ40 Axle Questions (1 Viewer)

My current project is a 1970 FJ40. My understanding is that these are course splined and also drum brake. I would like to upgrade the axles with stronger Birfields and get rid of any other known weaknesses while I am at it. I would also like to put disc brakes on these.

Am I sunk and need to find a later year fine splined axle or is there a way to upgrade these and make them work?

I went through the FJ40 FAQ and there was info on swapping a 60, rebuilding an axle etc. It didn't have the answers to my questions. I may have missed something however I would really appreciate some help on this.

Easiest is a later year axle or just upgrade the knuckles out from a Toyota mini truck
or 4Runner or from any later year 40 series 60 series 70 series ,
and for birfs maybe look for some chromoly ones.
