Trying to work out what previous owner has jerry rigged, I’m an amateur so may be dumb questions but I assumed the red taped lead was pos and the black neg and managed to start the car with jump-leads, upon further inspection the red taped lead seems to ground to the alternator bracket on the block and everything else runs from the black wire, a side note is that the alternator was sparking when we started the car with jumpleads. Have I wrongly assumed the negative and positive, if so how did the car start?
Just wanting to check before I put in and ruin a battery.

Negative will be grounded to chassis and/or engine and positive will terminate at starter if its wires correctly.
Thanks, still confused how I was able to start the car with the wrong terminals. Didn’t know it was possible.
