I have the heater apart. Knob needs to come off for defrost vent louvers to come out. I believe the knob is fixed to the shaft. There was a C-clip on the shaft and nut on back side which I removed. I assumed the shaft would slide out. Please tell me what I am missing.
Thanks...

Been so many years since I had mine apart I can’t remember 😞 and the parts book doesn’t show an exploded view. Maybe the shaft is just stuck from corrosion? Can‘t remember if the knob threads onto the shaft either. Not much help here but watching as I might have a rebuild of mine (again) in the near future, my defrost knob doesn‘t pull out anymore due to corrosion or something.

Could have helped yesterday. I was around where I have a few of these stored away. Those have a real defrost damper vs a simple door on bottom. Believe the heater core is the same as the 68-73 heaters. The elbows for the defrost hoses that are hard to find.

Finally figured it out. If anyone else has the need to remove this knob there is a tiny pin that holds the knob and shaft to louver. You must drive that pin out to remove the knob shaft assembly. Can't see how this was the easiest way to design but..... that is what they did.
