I've searched and it seems that many people like Motul 5W-40. My question is that I live in the south, only drive the vehicle on days when it's north of freezing temps. Additionally, the vehicle has 184k miles, sweats just a little oil out of the rear main seal and has a very slight puff of blue smoke on startup (engine temp is steady so I'm really hoping this isn't a head gasket issue).

Anyway, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Shell Rotella T 10w-30 in the winter and Rotella T 15w-40 the rest of the year.

If you've searched then you found people run just about any combination of oil imaginable. Synthetic, dino, some even mix different weights to give them a perceived magical elixir. The most important thing is that it has oil, and you change it at the proper interval.

Are you saying it makes no difference what kind of oil he runs? If he has searched, he has probably also had people tell him that there are lots of opinions and "the most important thing is to change it blah blah blah..." What he wants is recommendations on a particular oil. What oil do you run in yours? Come on, its a forum, play along!

Ive been trying to determine what the best oil is for the 1FZ myself. I love the Shell Rotella, I run the T6 5w-40 in my 7.3L Ex and love the stuff. I live in the south and run it year around, have it analyzed and have been recommended to do 10k oil change intervals by Blackstone.

If you want to run different oils at different times of the year, I would at least stick to one type, either conventional all the time or synthetic all the time. No facts behind that, just seems to make sense to me.

Ive got to do an oil change on a 97 and am wondering what oil to go with, so also looking for the latest recommendations.

Running Rotella T6 5W-40 here...good stuff...

FWIW: I live in the warm south west, rarely getting below 30 in winter. I found 15W-40 to be a bit thicker than I prefer, at least in the winter. I'm running dino 10W-30 like my owner's manual recommends. I've got two other 2.0L turbocharged vehicles, and am quite familiar with synthetics and research on oils; still, I'm perfectly confident on sticking with dino oil. As I've found what countless threads also say, these engines are easy on their oil.

Find (on Mud)and go with the Toyota non US (the entire world where your 80 is much more like subjected to the harsher conditions that the 80 was designed for) oil recommendations and go by that spec.

I run this in every engine I own. If you have some small leaks you may try the Rotella dino stuff. It may slow them down a bit.

@89cruiserfj62 the FAQ section has a large thread specifically towards this topic. Also, about every month somebody brings it up so there is an abundance of these threads. Its always the same thing, I run Delo, I run Mobil, I like Mobil 1, Rotella only, and on and on like that. Its like asking what the best tire is for your truck. What might actually be interesting is if somebody started a poll thread with several of the manufacturers and weights and you could just click on the one you use most.

Mobil 1 10w 30.

With about 220K miles I notice my truck, a 96, makes blue tail-pipe smoke and has a STRONG odor in the mornings when cold. This goes away after about 3-5 min. I have read this is common with oil leaking around the valve seals when parked, at a slight decline, which is how I park. I use M1 10-40, and thought switching to the Rotella 15-30 Dino may fix or help the issue, Any opinions

I don't think they make a 15w-30

I'll play along,

Shell Rotella T 15W40 (early April to mid November)

Shell Rotella T 10W30 (mid November to early April)

your right, meant 15-40

I live in NorCal and have used M1 0w40 for two winters now and the truck is good and had a better oil pressure than M1 10w30 that i've used when I first got her. I change the oil every 4k regardless on how I used the rig.

If you really want to find the best oil for your truck, just like other 'mudders, experiment on your oil weight or brand. As we all are, we just tend to "want" the best but in reality, our cruisers will take just any oil you'll throw in it. They were built to last and just keep up with regular maintenance.

When I visited Philippines way back in '05, my uncle owns a stock 40 as his wheeling rig and owned a '89 M3 as his baby and was meticulous about it. Everytime he changed his oil on his beemer, he puts that oil in his 40 and from my recollection, he had no issues. I always told him not be a cheapskate and buy new oil. He always told me, nahh, the 40 will do just fine. He still have his 40 up until 2012 and he swapped motor and put a diesel in her. Of course if you take that oil to blackstone for analysis you'll find some crazy stuff sh*t in there. And he was using M1 5w30 since that was the only available to him. I thought that was crazy...
