Ok, so I have had this problem with my BJ74 for going on a year now. I had an overheating problem I thought and when I looked into it the Water was being pushed out via my overflow from the engine and once low enough the engine would heat up. Now I went through everything possible and finally decided to pull the head. This was hard since the Crusier only has 23,000 Kilometers on it. it was like pulling apart a new engine. Everyone looked good, I put in a new head gasket and put everything back together. Had the same problem pushing out water. Did I pressure test and it was loosing pressure. So needless to say the waterpump, hoses, radiator, were all changed, the tubo was checked out..etc..etc.etc so the only thing left was to pull the head again and possible the head was cracked. The BJ74 has been sitting around for almost a year waiting for me to pull the head yet again.

I finally pulled the head last weekend, and the gasket did not look so good. I took the head in to my local machine shop and told them to give the works and find the crack. After two days they called and told me my head was in great shape :crybaby:. However they did spoke where they think the head gasket was leaking .

So now I have to decide, was it just me screwing up the head gasket last time, and the gasket prior to that (original) had the same problem? or do I have some other problem, perhaps the wrong gasket (although I did get it in the Toyota wraping with the correct number and it matched the orignal one as well as the 3B one). Or maybe some other problem. They checked the head to see if it was warped and it was perfect.

Has anyone else run into this problem with a 13B-T seems like it was leaking on right side at 2 and 3 pistons.

I usually never use gasket dressing, does anyone else use gasket dressing would that even help?

Thanks,

Michael

it was you...LOL!!

easy to damage a head gasket, look how heavy and difficult it is to move that mother around without setting it down for a rest...

glad you might have found the problem...so i guess i will be coming down for a ride in it again..eh?

It appears as though it was me :crybaby: The only thing that is not clear is it was doing this before I pulled the head the first time so maybe there is more to this. All I know is if I put it back together..AGAIN... and I have the same issue I am likey to burn it to the ground that same day.

Wayne, I pretty much figured if you come down for a visit again you will be wanting to drive the 2006 HZJ79 series Pickup :D

Cheers,

Micahel

buddy, i would be all over a drive in that BEAUTIFUL rig...but then i will want it!!
BooHoo, i can not afford another toy.

cheers M8 (and welcome back to Mud)

had a HG let go with a small hairline crack between the exhaust valves. ordered a kit from 4wheelauto and had the head gasket replaced professionally. the mechanic remarked on the replacement HG, saying it was much more stronger/heavy duty than the the stock HG...

that was several year ago and no problems so far with the HG.

.000002 cents

Thanks Wayne, glad to be back. I don't want to tease you or anything... my 79 series has 3200 kilometers on it and still has the new car smell on the inside

Cheers,

Michael

Hi,
Did you check or change the radiator cap?

Update - all fixed

Hello Group,

Well it looks like this is one of those rare time when it actually is the head gasket :D.

I put the head back in with a new gasket on Saturday and it looks like that has done the trick. I also think I have figured out what happened.

The Original problem I am certain of was a failed head gasket, at only 44,000 kilometers. When I originally pulled the head it looked fine and when I went to put the new gasket on I had servcal different gasket numbers and the gaskets were pretty much the same just a few minor differences, so I took the original gasket and picked the one that match it exactly. That gasked did not have any tin around the water ports. This time after pulling the head and taking it in, they even saw where it was possible leaking when I got the head back from the shop I finally pulled the gasket from the block, and it looked like it was leaking where they stated, but it looked as if it was leaking around at least 4 of these small water ports.

The gasket I used was the recommended part number ending in 040 and I think this is an improved design over the original it has tin around all the water ports, I think this has fixed the orignal problem. I also decided to put in an 88c thermostat instead of the 82c one I had in the engine. My reason is I think the 82c works great in the 3B especially if you are on Southern California like I am, however looking at the design on the 13B-T you have hot water being pumped back into the top of the housing and I think with the 82c it gets messed up and does not have time to close and recoop so to speak, just my theory could be wrong but I stoke both so the 88c went back into the Cruiser.

I will drive it for a few weeks as much as I can and make sure it is tip top again. I would hate to tell you what was going to happen to this BJ74 if I still had the problem after this, I know Wayne knows, but luckily Wasabi is all better so he stays as a BJ74 for now.

Thanks for those who contributed.

Cheers,

Michael
