What works to repair/protect the downpipe where it's exposed to road salt and abrasion coming off the front tire? On my '74 it's getting quite corroded and I want to apply something to protect it or at least slow down the corrosion.

That might work in Florida. I tried it, but the gravel/sand/salt they put on the roads in the winter blasted the paint right off.Go to the local hardware store and get a can of spray paint that is designed for high temps. I believe they go as high as 2000 degrees F, and paint your exhaust after srapping the junk off of it.
Is there anywhere to hang some mudflap-like material and isolate/protect the downpipe from the crap coming off the tires?
On the '70s the exhaust runs outside the frame; that's where it's exposed to abrasion and corrosion. There may be a way to rig a shield for the pipe that's clear of the tire. Thanks for the ideas.
