What works to repair/protect the downpipe where it's exposed to road salt and abrasion coming off the front tire? On my '74 it's getting quite corroded and I want to apply something to protect it or at least slow down the corrosion.

Is there anywhere to hang some mudflap-like material and isolate/protect the downpipe from the crap coming off the tires?

Go to the local hardware store and get a can of spray paint that is designed for high temps. I believe they go as high as 2000 degrees F, and paint your exhaust after srapping the junk off of it.

That might work in Florida. I tried it, but the gravel/sand/salt they put on the roads in the winter blasted the paint right off.

I've not spent much time around 70 series, but on 80's there's already provisions for hanging something like the panel just to the right of the gap that exposes the downpipe on my truck. Maybe the pic will give you an idea for what you're working with. If you posted a pic of the area it would probably help generate input as well.

I had a new exhaust system custom built which goes straight down and turns immediately to the left side of the truck. The entire price was 350 w/a 10 year warranty all inside and above the bottom of the frame walls. I have a video of it but it may be too big to attach.

On the '70s the exhaust runs outside the frame; that's where it's exposed to abrasion and corrosion. There may be a way to rig a shield for the pipe that's clear of the tire. Thanks for the ideas.

HDJ81 factory exhaust routes outside the frame rail as well, my aftermarket is run on the inside though.

After a lot of frustration with regular and aluminized steel exhausts, I built a stainless exhaust. It wasn't cheap, but it should stay shiny and last a good long time.
