Well I'm taking the plunge. I'm going to put a 12H-T into my HJ60. The old 2H is dying a slow plainful death and its gotta go. It would probably run for years but it's burning 2-3 litres of oil every 1000 kms and that's not good for the environment. I understand that the swap is basically a drop in but I need some reassurance! I really need this swap to go fast and painless so I want to make sure I have everything I need. What do I need to look out for? Does the 12H-T have factory pyro, egt and boost gauges that I should get with the engine? Does the 12H-T have a shut down timer? Any other electrical or wiring considerations? I understand I have to modify the throttle cable. What do I need for that modification? I'll put in a new clutch, pilot bearing and throwout bearing, resurface the flywheel, anything else? Are the rad and heater hoses the same?

Thanks

I am just finishing up this swap. See the thread in my sig file. I am driving it now but still have some small stuff to take care of. Normal 2H throttle cables seem to do the job fine, and if you have your 2H and all its parts on hand you will be in good shape.

I am just sorting out the last of the vacuum and electrical now. It doesnt shut down immediately, which I am trying to sort out. When its hot takes about a minute to shut off after the key is switched..?

And there seem to be some vacuum and turbo boost sensor stuff that is on the 12h-t and not the 2H.

I found that you can nicely use one of the fuel (or fuel return) lines from a gas FJ60/62 to act as the fuel return line and just tee into one of the breathers in the rear to get the fuel back into the tank.

No pyro but there is a boost gauge and you need the 12HT Sahara dash to run it.
Its a about 50mm wide and sits in between the speedo and the oil, fuel and battery gauge.
It should go smoothly and anyway you cant factor everything in.
I wouldnt worry about pyro and boost gauges until its up and running.
They are usefull but very few have them fitted new.

I've done a lot of searching on this site for engine swaps. I've followed Jan & Michael, Zander and mountain goat. Got lots of help watching these guys do it first. I've only got one weekend to get it all together so I just want to get all my duck's in a row. I have no experience with the 12H-T engine so I don't want to get hung up by a throttle cable or something minor like that.

Thanks

Putting a 12H-T into your HJ60 is pretty straightforward compared to what Mountain Goat had to go through on his FJ. It's a bolt up and the issues are minor; custom cable from the bellcrank on the firewall down to the injection pump and
extending one of the temp sender leads over to the opposite side of the block.
You can power the glow screen through the lead that fed your glow plugs, but you will want to run a wilson switch type manual control glow so that you are not heating the screen everytime you start. The 12H-T is a direct injector and only requires glow on a cold start when it is below freezing.

No exhaust modifications necessary?

from a 2H to 12H-T yes .. cos the turbo exhaust is a litlle diferent .. not much really but yes.

The 12ht wants at least a 2.5" exhaust all the way back. Hopefully you will get a flange with your engine as I did. From that I went a a muffler shop and had thm build an exhaust for $350. I went 3" actually and put a straight through magnaflow where the old muffler was.

Yeah I just spent $300 putting in an all new exhaust as well. I put in a 2.5" because I was planning on rebuilding the 2H but it'll do. I'll plumb my pyro while the engine is out as well. Does the 12H-T have a timer for shutting down? Commercial diesels quite often have a timer that won't let the engine shut down until the turbo stops spooling, in order to prevent oil starvation in the turbo. Is that what you're experiencing?

Did you have 3" exhaust . ? how do you feel it at low rpm . ? the torque . ?

So I'm in the turbo process with my 2H with a similar turbo as comes in the 12H-T but not sure about 2.5" or 3" exhaust .

G & S is supplying the engine. They have a price list on their site.

I put a 3" exhaust on. Its tight by the rear wheel and suspension, but I really like it. I cant compare it to a 2.5" as it's all I have tried on the 12h-t, but the motor certainly seems to put out the low end, and uphill on the highway...

Well bad on me .. I ordered a 2.5 from summit, so I will try with this and when my setup finish could post some impresions ..
