12/24V alternators on 3B (1 Viewer)

could someone please educate me about alternators? what decides if they are 12 or 24 Volts? is it just the voltage regulator? so if I take a 24 V, drop in a 12 V regulator, would that be it?
and is the vacuum pump the same?

in the same year then the Vacumm pumps will be the same as for your elec quetion i have no idea but i do know i swapped a 24 reg into my 12V system and it didn't work... so i suspect it will be the windings in the alternator...

Wayne is correct is it the windings and bushings, I also think the bearing is different as well, but the pump does look the same from 85 - 87. I have a 12v alternater if you need to check something out.

I always thought windings only dictated what phase the power coming out was? Actual voltage is regulated? But school was along time ago. And electricity never really was my thing. Thevenize that!

A "simple" lesson in voltage induction says that you are absolutley right it is the # of turns in the winding! INcase any one cares to see heres a link.
