I noticed that in the 100Series, there is some sort of plastic/vinyl trim that covers the gap between the rear of the LC and the tailgate (see part circled in red). This looks cool and seem very practical for sliding things in the rear.

Is there a counterpart accessory for the 80Series? OEM or aftermarket?

Has anybody done a similar gadget? Am thinking of looking for a similar piece of material in the junkyards, then put on some hinges, and attach them to the stainless steel lip that covers the carpet.. Any ideas on how to do this and make it look like a factory install?

Will not work in an 80.

cdan, does this mean that Toyota never made a similar part for the 80? And this part came only with the 100series?

Yes.

Nope.

Maybe you could trim it down to fit??

cdan - can you provide the part number of this accessory? How much in US prices would this part cost? I'll local dealer if they have one on stock so I can measure.

You can measure it all you like.

You can't get there from here.....................

There is no way to attach that thing to an 80 Series body unless you graft the 100 series rear floor into an 80.

guess the OEM approach is not possible.

thanks for your inputs.

Sheesh, you guys give up too easy. C-Dan says the factory 100 part won't fit so you quit. Ask him if the 1/4" thick aluminum plate on his tailgate came from a Toyota. It's a good idea, why not take some thick rubber or plastic or boat top fabric or something and figger out how to bolt/screw/glue it where you want it? It's called ingenuity. Go, you have your assignment, I don't want to hear about see about it, read about it, or even smell it until you are done with it. Then make us proud.

Holy crap, I've been dealing with a twelve year old son way too much lately...:flipoff2:

I don't see why anyone would want this, but you could easily just make your own.

Cover your chrome tailgate trim with vinyl or leather. Just like seat covers or upholstery. Then screw back down. If you want a more durable version make one out of plastic or some other comparable material.

One solution could be to find the right color length of plastic. Heat the plastic to form onto the chrome piece. Then glue in place.

You missed the purpose. It covers the gap between the tailgate and the floor when the tailgate is folded down. It isn't a beautification modification.

Resurrecting this ancient thread because I would love to find some quality non-Mad Max way to cover this gap. Anyone found a nice method or some random Australian company fabricating somethung for our 80’s?
