100 Series Starter: replacement or rebuild

I'm a definite maybe now... starter is about to go out completely. I just picked up a new one from NAPA, and gonna try and work on it a bit when I can this week.

I think accessing the starter is a royal PITA. But, for about $15, I think you can rebuild your starter with parts from Toyota. At least, Toyota has rebuild kits for the 80 series starters, which I think is similar to the 100 starters.

Be glad you don't have the D4D. The starter on that is inside the V and requires removal of virtually everything on the top end.

I think the 2UZ-FE engine has similar painful attributes.....

Yes, you must remove the intake manifold to replace the starter on a 2UZ-FE (the motor in early 100-series in the US)

Correction: the motor in all 100 series rigs 1/1998-8/2007.

Rebuild parts for OEM starter run about $40 from CDan.

They become non-rebuildable with the 5.7L engine (3UR-FE). The whole engine is throw-away.

Welcome to the new Toyota=GM.

I assumed Toyota changed the engine model designator when they put the VVT-i heads on them in '03. Guess not.

VVT-i = '06-'07 MY 100-Series/LX470

Now I'm feeling really ashamed by my inaccurate 100-series trivia.

I had my starter replace because the nose gear drive bearing failed at 152k contacts were fine. I had a mechanic friend of mine, a jeep guy do it. It took him 2 hours and I asked did the links on replace it help. He replied I did'nt look at them they would of only slowed me down.:)

Labor $100
Starter from Toyota $185

Phil,

That's not a bad track record at 152k miles for your starter Just for the benefits of this group, would you mind giving us the link to the rebuild/extraction process please?

I was very happy with the contacts but could not find anyone else that lost the bearing. Also Im assuming the contacts never were replace prior to my purchase at 75K combined with dealer records.

Alia like I said above I had a mechanic friend do it because I was pressed for time on my beach run down in Mexico. It would of taken me much longer because I would have read MUDs version of the service process.

Could not bring myself to take my 80 that close to the ocean so I took the 100:hillbilly:

Nothing like cruising down the beach 100 style:steer:

Crickey, that's a serious job Ron!!! My back hurts just thinking about it.

^ Its really not that bad; like anything its easier and faster after the initial R&R. But I'd much prefer to do it every ~150k (OEM new) rather than the last 75k interval (Toyota reman).
