My '96 land cruiser with 280,000 miles on it has an engine knock. Listening with a stethoscope and a long screwdriver, I can clearly hear it in either the #1 or #2 cylinder, or both. I'm thinking it's either the rod bushing or the bearing.

I'm contemplating:
  • engine swap
  • full rebuild
  • partial rebuild to fix the rod bushing or bearing (and other stuff like seals)
  • buying a lower milleage '95 - '97 80.

I found a Series 100 engine with 90,000 miles on it for $2,500. I haven't been able to find a 1fzfe with that low milleage at that price. Is it possible to put this V8 into the Series 80? If so, has anyone done it and documented it?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I generally hate search nazi's - but the search function here is awesome.

You plug any viable motor to swap in the upper right search bar & I'm sure you'll see results. Slee has the most seen one, a user 'Jason89i' did a nice convert too. They are just 2 of the I-force motors off top/head.

You'll find every conceivable 80 issue has been posted & will return you search results, this place is a wealth of knowledge for the new 80 owner / new user issues. GL!

Been done a few times before. Not unheard of and there has been at least 3-4 that I have read about.

LS swap or keep the 1FZ imo. those are the only 2 gas options i would go with.

Probably swap in a good used 1fz for less than that v8. Just did one recently.

Not to thread jack, but how much does a conversion cost roughly? If going to a GM V8

Done before and 2 doing it now (search threads)

There was one that just popped up on ebay recently as well that had the same transplant.

Too many variables to give a easy answer - new motor from GM performance or a good deal on a used motor, which motor exactly, donor vehicle in hand or buying all extras (very expensive), you buying labor/welding or DIY, etc.

Smart shopping a LSx could be self-installed ~<$7k, buying a new turnkey swap seems many talk mid/high teen$, with some shops quoting short of $20k

There was a guy trying to build a kit to swap LSx motors to our framerails- he was pretty far along, not sure his user name - sorry.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. A low mileage (90K) series 100 motor for $2,500 prompted this question, but for me, it'll be easier/cheaper to stick with the 1fzfe. I just don't want it to knock, so it's either a rebuild of some sort or a swap.

100 series engine in an 80 series doable? crazy?

Doable-Yes

Crazy- Maybe, Horsepower and torque gains are relatively insignificant when you consider the cost of the conversion. The biggest problem I see with a 2UZ-FE conversion is the wiring. Probably better options if your are looking to do a motor swap.

Personally I would build a 1FZ-FE, if build correctly it has the potential to make a lot of power.

Here is a vid of one that's been converted:

25G's for the Slee swap, better off with a re-build or buy a used Tundra, probably cost the same.

Well opinions abound here so I'll throw mine in as well. Its a very personal decision which way / type of swap you might do. I've done 6.2L in JKU's, but since coming over to the LC world I wanted to stay Toyota and its high reliability. Not that a new GM crate Motor is not reliable, but its just a different animal and personal perspective.

The wife has a 4.7L in her LX and it so fits my driving style. I'm a sad 70-75mph guy that loves the journey as much as most and Ive had my share of fast cars and trucks in the past. I enjoy the cruise, but hate the merge/overtake and Hills that my destination and 1FZ provide.

$/HP is truly in favor of the GM swap - No one can argue that. I can't even argue the Swap Cost for Toyota over some of the GM's I've seen, but I've also seen, well, many of them put for sale after completion, sans RPM&O who had an accident with his and some others.

It was a tough decision and I was over and back several times with GM VS Toyo, but in the end I wanted the same thing I had now which was an extremely reliable truck that I could take anywhere and I never really felt that way with the GM Conversions. So, after much thought I decided to do the 4.7L that fits my driving style needs and Slee that meets my requirements for precision and attention to detail in a swap.

And I hear you all that It could be cheaper and have more hp, but It could not meet my personal perspective any other way. I've even went farther down the rabbit hole by going with a new complete Short Block / rebuilt Heads and about everything else that moves being New OEM...

Good luck -

J
