anyone know if the military style 5 gallon Scepter red fuel plastic cans are available in California at Checker's, Kragen's, Pep boys, Central 4WD in Sac, etc.? I would prefer to buy locally to avoid shipping costs.

I'm also in Cali in need of some good gas cans. Only cans I've seen in the automotive stores around here are Shlitz cans... (blitz)

I need two 5 gal gas cans and one 5 gal H2O can very soon!

Has anyone from cali looked into these? Not even sure if they'll sell them in CA
Obviously I havne't looked into it yet either.

Anybody know some good alternatives? Are the wedco cans decent? Probably will be forced to buy the CARB compliant cans.

Wedco non CARB compliant is the only way to go. Find an out of state friend and have them buy the non CARB compliant cans and ship them to you! Kalifornia CARB Compliant cans SUCK! Do NOT buy the s***z cans. They leak so badly, even the CARB compliant ones aren't due to their leaking.

Can't speak about the Scepter ones.

And if you do decide to get Scepter, do not go through offroadrecovery.com. I placed an order for 5 cans on March 29, received a PayPal verification and automated response, and then nothing. They won't return my calls or e-mails. Stay away.

unfortunately here at work that site is blocked.... I'll take a look when I get around to a computer I can use outside of work. Don't have internet at home either.... ohh joy!

Are you in Cali?? If not, probably doesn't do us Kali-fornians any good....

See loeky's post...I ordered 8 cans, 3 spouts for a about $110 shipped. I'll let ya know the quality when I receive them.

I have to say a big thanks to a member of this board who lives just across the border of a neighboring state. He has agreed to receive 2 Wedco cans for me-the real ones without the bogus CARB complient gasoline spiller. You know who you are-Many Thanks.

I'll pick them up on the way home from Cruise Moab.

Did the same thing with a very good MUD member. He knows who he is and, like you, I'm grateful for his effort.

i may buy some more after seeing how good these are. i would heavily suggest to other CA people to pick them up while they aren't asking questions.

for what it is worth I went to a military vehicle show over the weekend @ Tower Park Marina near Lodi California and there was a guy there selling Scepter cans. by the time I got around to him I was broke! went back the next day and all the red fuel cans he had were gone already. I did manage to snag the fast pour spout for the fuel can and a black 5 gallon water can. sure wish I had seen this vendor first.

I recently went on a trip with a buddy. He had the Scepter CARB compliant fuel and water can. Both closure caps leaked--my buddy was disappointed. We finally got the water to stop leaking by cranking really hard on the cap. It was almost as if you needed a tool to close it tight enough. The fuel was mounted on his rear bumper and would leak as we were driving. When he went to empty fuel out using the CARB spout, the spout leaked even worse.

I have the Wedco water and CARB fuel can. Neither leaked and both worked great. Although I don't use the CARB spout. My bumper rack mounts the can high enoung that I can use a super sphion and empty the can into my fuel tank without removing it from the rack.

My experience with Blitz cans, Wedco cans and Septer cans is that the CARB complient ones leak every time. Actually the Blitz regular cans always leak too. The Wedco cans, though, are great. Just stay away from the CARB complient ones. They suck. The only time I have heard Brentbba use bad language was when he was trying to pour gas out of his CARB complient Wedco can and spilling gas everywhere. Quite funny in retrospect.

I have two Septer water carriers and they leak in a subtle way as well. I can live with it, but if you want absolutly no leaks, the standard Wedco cans are by far the best. Don't even bother with anything else. I have carried full Wedco gas cans inside my 80 and not even a whiff of a fume.

The TLCA McGrew Trail Run (Southern Oregon) is in July and I will be attending. I can probably haul quite a few brand new empty cans if any of you are going. Just a thought for those that need the non CARB.

It was a Blitz CARB compliant can, and yes they to SUCK the big !%$!@$@%@%@%@#$%@%@#%@#$%@#$%@#^@^@#$%!%.:censor:

hehehe:D

BTW - that Blitz can is now residing in the Prima Descha county dump site down in San Juan Capistrano. Have two Wedco regular cans now.

Any good sources for new Wedco cans.. in stock?

It seems ( I was told) there is a large number of backorders on the Wedcos

True ?

Any verdict on these cans? That's a real good price!! Do they leak?

they seem to be good cans. a little surface rust on the outside, but the insides look brand new. not sure if they were NOS and not used or had a coating added. either way, i'm happy with them - even ordered another couple for the road.

as for leaks - i need to do that test today and see. haven't taken a trip yet with them obviously.

see this reply on another thread for pictures:

there's also another link to Swiss mil spec surplus for cheap.

hth.

They look good enough to buy several... Would appreciate the leak test results ;-)

Probably used for Diesel and that's why there's no rust on the inside... Can't imagine with all the oil in diesel that the can would rust... Could be wrong though.
