those with digital multimeters what is the voltage at the battery with the engine running? please check at idle and at higher RPM and report the higher of the two.

this is related to the water temprature gauge thread

My system DVM will read 14.86 upon startup, at around 1000rpm. The max voltage will be around 14.92, depending on outside temperature.

After driving around, the DVM will show a low of 13.95 at idle, 650 rpm; or any higher rpm

...

Did you take these readings on a cold day? still within spec but just barely and at both ends of it.

You have put a lot of electrical work in, very nice setup.

Got a question you may be able to answer, have you found the 80 to have a noisy ground? Have you made any changes as related to electrical noise? I have been plagued with noise on AM that does not change pitch with RPM (not ignition or alternator) but is louder/different when first coming to idle. At one time I thought I might have had a ground loop problem but after chasing that for a wile I am starting to think the antenna just sucks for AM.

Raven, I am fuzzy on the details, but I seem to recall there being a tsb applicable to 80 cruisers related to noisy am radio. I believe a defective antenna connection was involved.

Raven;
I don't use AM very much, but my stock radio sounds fairly good.

On the negative side of things, I have noticed that grounding points used in the FZJ80 are sometimes corroded. In the stock battery installation there is a lead right off the battery, negative post, that ties to the left fender and that one was real green with corrosion. I haven't looked into the TSB that Rich mentions, but that would be a source of lousy AM reception.

From a communications point of view (7mhz to 460mhz) the cruiser is surprisingly quite. Very little alternator whine and not much in RF noise from the spark plugs.
