Guys -

Awhile back I had inquired to Christo as to whether I could buy one of the racks he imports from South Africa and use it on both the 80 and the 100, since I didn't want to have to buy two racks. I liked the design of this rack for many reasons, not the least of which was the modularity and ease of being able to mount a rooftop tent (side rails simply unbolt, leaving a contiguous flat surface).

Anyway, we took some measurements and felt that one rack would work on both, but which one? The 80 rack (1.3 meters wide) is just a few inches wider than the 100 rack (1.25 meters). But we did know that the half length 80 rack was the same width as the 100 rack, so why wouldn't it work? Plus, I like a narrower rack anyway, that doesn't stick out beyond the edge of the roof line.

At the same time, I learned that one of the NorCal 80s locals, Derek Flint, had ordered an 80 rack from Christo, but the manufacturer had put a 100 rack in the box! Christo let me know and he made me a deal that I could have the 100 rack minus shipping, since he'd have to pay to ship it back anyway if Derek F. simply returned it. He also cut me a deal on a complete set of mounting hardware for an 80. Now we had the goods, just had to throw it up on both trucks and see how it all fit. Turns out it fits superbly! Andy Pollock (CruiserDrew) came by this afternoon and helped me set up both trucks. Here are a couple pics I snapped off. Christo, if you're reading this, I'm zipping up many more hi-res pics to send off to you, as I promised to Ben when I ordered all this stuff. The 80 pics will be posted in the 80 section under a similarly-titled thread.

Looks Great! :D

could you post some closeup pics of the mounting points on the roof?

also, were you able to cover up the gutter with the OEM cover after the roof rack was installed?

what color is your 100? Thundercloud?

Looks great! How's the wind noise with it? I would love to get the half-rack, but I won't be able to fit in my garage. Damn.

siglo - There is an anodized aluminum mounting rail that replaces the factory rack and bolts down with the same size bolts on each side. You cannot put the factory rack back on, which is fine with me as it looks much cleaner when the roof rack is not on there.

pimp - Sonora Gold Pearl

macneill - Not too much noise, surprisingly.

Allright then, we'll just lose the OME, T-Bars and the 33-35s and go back to stock.

My Ohioan Outback fits in my small standard 7' tall garage with about 3" to spare. I have 3" lift in the back and 285/75R16 which are makes my truck about 2" shorter than Shoot's truck.

Macnail,
Thanks, yes I build it myself. Aluminum are easy to cut using wood miter saw blade and small drill press/milling machine combo. Weigth about 32 Lbs. I don't have full floor though, Only 4 Yakima style cross bars. I wish I just bought the bracket from Slee though. The rail would make it a lot easier to remove. Mine are somewhat permanent since you have to reseal all 12 factory bolt holes. Derek could buy the extra mounting bracket so Slee must be able to just sell the bracket by itself.

Shotts, I hate the color at first but now grow to like it.

Derek that truck looks really good with the rack.

I have the money I would rather just buy Outback rack. It took me too much time to design and fabricate it myself.

does anybody know the contact info of the place that makes those outback roof racks?
I've been trying to locate a dealer/distributor close to me with no luck.. The closest I've found is one shop in south Africa that didn't reply to my email..

Siglo, Outback products are made here in South Africa and Christo is the US agent. They don't only make racks, but a huge range of offroad and camping related equipment. All of their products are distributed through the 4x4Megaworld group and the owner of this group is also a partner in the Outback company. Visit: www.4x4megaworld.co.za and http://www.4x4megaworld.co.za/Products.aspx?id=4
Their direct competion is a company called Frontrunner and they do similar products and there are always huge argument as to which is best. www.frontrunner.co.za

Watch your inbox, I'll send you the email address of my local branch manager and I'll ask him to help you out or he'll be able to refer you to someone who can help you.
