Are the valves adjusted? They might be burnt on #3.

Just saw your previous post "Bad Gas Mileage", that sucks that you just bought it. There should be a law about one cruiser owner doing that to a new cruiser owner. Don't get discouraged, I can't even begin to tell you what I found wrong with my 60 that the previous owner had jerry rigged together. Get a good service manual and go through her. Took me a few months to get everything right in my 60, but now she purrs like a kitten and gets about 15 mpg. These trucks are great and will run forever if properly taken care of.

I Have Not Done A Valve Adjustment. I Am Off Tomorrow And Will Try To Do One Then, I Am Worried About All Of The Vacuum Lines. Will I Have To Mess With Many Oy Them, Just To Adjust The Valves. This Is My Daily Driver And I Am Afraid If I Tear It Down Too Far I Wont Have It Running In Time To Go Back To Work...

Someone In My Previous Post Asked About Horsepower. The Only Thin I Can Say Is A 55 Mph It Runs At 2500 Rpms. Is This Normal For 84' Fj60 MY TIRES ARE 31X10.5X15

Valve adjustment is pretty easy. Not really any vaccum lines in the way if there still in the factory location. With the engine still cold, remove air cleaner, take out the 2-3 (can't remmeber how many) bolts holding the valve cover on and then do a test lift of the cover itself to see if anything else is in the way. Once your sure everything is out of the way start her up with the valve cover still sitting in place and warm the engine up for about 15 min. then proceed with cover removal and valve check/adjust. Whole proccess should only take about and hour, two tops.

Do you have a manual? If not please get one ASAP you will use it.

Here is a little write up on the valve adjustment. It isnt too hard, take your time. If the engine gets too cool you may have to warm it back up but I dont think so. Remember that the intake valves are next to the ports on the intake manifold and the exhaust valves are next to the ports on the exhaust manifold.

You can see how the valves and rockers work when you are rocking the truck to alighn the mark on the flywheel.

good luck and take your time.

Just a thought, but after you read the instructions from the link above (and if you havent got a manual yet) you maybe wondering where you see the line that marks the TDC.

As you are standing at the front of the truck looking into the engine bay look at the side of the engine that is on your left. Back at the rear of the engine on the bell housing there is a door in the housing. Look inside there and you can see the fly wheel. (I am old and blind so I need a flash light to see the marks) When you have the truck in 4th gear and rock the truck you can see the fly wheel move. You just push or pull (rock) the truck until you see the line (once again I am old and blind so I marked my line in white paint)

Once you adjust one set of valves 1,2,3,5,7,9 or 4,6,8,10,11,12 you will have to push or pull (rock) the truck until the fly wheel has traveled 360 degrees. This will open up the other set of valves.

If you have a buddy who can help you rock the truck thats cool, you can pay more attention to looking for the TDC mark it can go by the window pretty fast. My wife has gotten pretty good at lineing it up while I push the truck.

You a medic by any chance? I spent some time at Benning back in the day.

Jus for s***es and giggles, anytime I take a hose off the beast I mark both ends with masking tape. I write 1 ond both sides of the connection for the first hose off. Mark 2 on both ends of the second hose off, so on and so on. The 60 has no shortage of vacume hoses and such. You should not have ot remove any of the 3mm vacume hoses to do the valve adjustment.
