does anybody have any pics of rook racks mounted to their factory roof rack- does arb or any other manufacturer make racks that mount to oem roof rack?

To tell you the truth i was thinking about doing the same thing. But what a lot of people are going to tell you and I agree with them is that the factory racks are too weak and fall off because of the crappy system they used to hold them on. So what most people do is take the factory rack off and install and safari rack with gutter mounts. That is what i am doing once i get the money. Just my $.02

Yakima 1A Raingutter rack/crossbars set is high enough to clear the factory rack.

You can stick what ever you want on your factory roof rack. Load it up with what ever you want. Just don't be surprised when your load flies off the roof -- rack included when you're going down the road. Also, don't be all too amazed when you find a dented roof.

100 to 150 pounds really isn't much weight -- something like 2 or 3 large suitcases.

Spend a few extra bucks and get something that bolts onto your raingutters. You'll be better off in the long run.

My brother has a Yakima clamped to his stock rack, at this point it's more bling than useable, I wouldn't put anything more than a couple of sleeping bags in it. The plan is to get some proper cross bars and remove the factory rack.

Heres a picture of mine with yakima 1a raingutter mounts and 78" cross bars. I have used this to carry 7 whitewater kayaks so it is plenty strong.

when you remove the factory rack, is there holes you have to fill in with filler or something, or are they glued on to the roof?

holes are there that u have to fill...check the faq for a good description or search

oem rack

I have the Surco roof rack and originally had it mounted to the OEM roof rack. What a PITA to mount and it never felt very secure. Since then I got the adapters for the rail gutters and entirely removed the OEM rack. I ended up plugging the holes in the roof with the correct size bolt /SS washer/rubber washer combo. Time will tell if it leaks. I've heard the rubber will disentegrate over time due to UV breakdown, but it works now in this rain!

This is a picture of the setup I used to run. I used Yakima Lowriders that attached to the factory rack system. This worked well to carry 3 bikes (approximately 65 lbs.). The problem was having the rack ripped off of the truck on several occasions in the woods. Rack Crossbars + tight trails with lots of trees and branches = broken rack system. I have subsequently removed the entire factory rack and now use my 2 inch receiver to carry things. I like the looks of a clean roof-line on the cruiser.
