Just spent my spare time for the past 2 weeks browsing all 184 pages here so please don't scold me for not trying a search first.

My cruise control hasn't worked since I owned the '91 80. The green cruise light comes on, but it doesn't engage when I activate the cruise. I've never seen the greel light blink. It just comes on like it's supposed to, but no cruise.

My red brake light on the display comes on during start-up but does not come on whie I pull the emergency brake handle. I've inspected the switch on the emergency brake and the one on the brake fluid cap. Both switches have continuity when they are supposed to and no cont. when they are not supposed to. This leads me to believe that the switches are not at fault.

What should I look at from here?

Tusk, i asked that question when my cruise control was working intermittently (sp?). My sensor was faulty in my brake resevoir (damn i can't spell). I unhooked mine thinking it could relate to the cruise problem but was told that the e-brake has no effect on the cruise.

Yeah, I can pull the e-brake on my '96 and the cruise stays on. It seems like the FSM ties all 4 (e-brake, real brake, fluid sensor, and cruise) together on the '91.

On the 91 the four sensors are tested from the front seat, then the speed sensor is tested from the front seat while you drive above and below a centain speed. It is real easy and uses the dash indicator light for the cruise to help pin down the cause. The FSM has a real easy test proceedure. Mine was the speed sensor and my dash indicator light would come on also.

Loquito -

Is this procedure the same for the `94 FZJ? I ask because I am working on my sister's `92 with this problem (e-brake light stays on, but dimly, then brightens when the e-brake is actually engaged, but in either case the cruiser control doesn't work). But I only have a `94 FSM. If not, is there a ready source online for this procedure?

Thanks,

On a '91-'92, at least, there's no reason to live without the cruise control (I think it's pretty uncommon for the actuator to be the problem), but it does take a little detective work.

1) In my experience, the most common problem is the speed sensor attached to the t-case, in line with the speedo cable. Pull it and see if it's fouled with oil. Sometimes you can get away with cleaning it and replacing the seals, sometimes not. Sensor runs ~$100.

2) Second most common is the brake fluid level sensor (also causes the brake dashlight to stay dimly lit). This is an inexpensive part that seems to wear out in general, and so is worth replacing if you're still on the original one.

3) As Loquito says, and as I have said before (guess you missed it, tusk :D), the cruise control system has its own really cool diagnostics mode, similar to pulling codes from the ECU. It's a little involved; starts out something like "turn the key to ON (do not start the vehicle), then depress the CC button while at the same time moving the lever to the "set" position. CC light should...blah blah bla.
It takes a page or two in the FSM. I do know the procedure exists online in the 3FE archives, which can be effectively searched from Birfield.com. (Your mission, should you choose to accept it.)

Good luck,

Curtis

Found it!

P.S. Hey Loquito, was this your post???

A. Turn the ignition switch on.
B. Turn the control switch to SET/Coast position, and keep it there.
C.Push the main switch ON.
D.check that the indicator light "CRUISE" lights-up in the
combination meter.
E.Turn the SET/Coast switch off
F.Meet the conditions listed in the table below.
G. Read the diagnostic code on the cruise control indicator light.
..................................................................
#1 Turn the control switch to SET/Coast position
there should be two flashes and then a second break and then two
flashes, then break then two flashes etc. If you get the flashes your
SET/Coast circuit is normal.
#2 Turn the control switch to RES/ACC possition.
this time you get a pause and three flashes, repeated again and
again. if you get the three flashes RES/ACC circuit is ok.
#3 Each switch is turned on
a. Control switch to CANCEL.
b. Stop light switch, (step on brake)
c. parking brake switch. ( pull up parking brake)
d.Neutral start switch. ( put in neutral)
if when you test each of the 4 cancel switches you DO NOT get any
flashes then those switchs are normal.
THIS IS YOU, And now you have to leave the driveway.
#4 Two parts for speed sensor
A. Drive at 25mph or below. if there are NO flashes sensor is normal.
b. Drive at 25mph or over. you should get constant steady blinking.
if she blinks sensor is ok.
Hope this helps, write back and let us know.

Thanks! I'll check this weekend. Suspect it's the brake fluid level sensor as the brake light stays on dimly (which I believe indicates low brake fluid, though it's not low). I suspect that's also why the CC doesn't work, as it's reading the brake indicator light and thus not engaging.

Thanks again,

Everything checked out up to the last step. No blinking cruise light over 25mph. Also the cruise light will not come on. I haven't stopped the vehicle yet and assume I'm still in diagnosis mode.
