Help - trying to mount '97 bumper on my '92

I always thought that these bumpers were all interchangeable. I got a bumper from another Mud member today and ran into problems trying to install it. The PO did not send the mounting brackets(I didn't think I needed them) with the bumper. I am trying to get the correct '97 brackets from him.

It seems there are some small differences between the mounting brackets on these two bumpers. The '92 bracket does not line up with the holes on the '97 bumper.

Can anyone confirm for me that with the correct '97 brackets that I will be able to use this bumper? Anyone have some spare mounting brackets laying around that would work on a '97 bumper?

Strange. I have read many posts over the past 6 years saying they are not interchangeable. I think you'll have to build your own brackets, but I've never tried to fit a '97 bumper to a '92 so what do I know.

Sorry, this doesn't help does it?

I can only speak about my ‘96 LX bumper, we put it on a ‘94. It is much fatter than the early bumper, the brackets are different, so the brackets for the later bumper needed to be used. IIRC, the mounting holes in the early frame are slightly closer together, so the late bracket holes needed to be slightly elongated to fit.

Not to mention the fact that even once you get it mounted, the bumper is wider than the flares. Mr. T widened the flares 93 and onward to accomodate the 16" wheel/tire package.

So, I gather from this thread and the other on bumper fit that the '97 will go on my '92 if I use the hardware from the '97 and tweak it a little. Even then it sounds like it will be a little wider than the original and may not look ideal. Anyone else with first hand knowledge or photos?

Call me crazy, but maybe it would make sense to hook up with WoodyFJ80 and see where his potential buyer is...Have WoodyFJ80 send you his bumper ('92 on a '92) and you send your bumper to his buyer ('97 on a '97)? Oh, and I'm still looking for the bracket pieces for you...but as those that have seen my garage can attest to, it is a considerable challenge finding "schtuff" in my garage, especially anything relatively small

I found the brackets (not to mention some other stuff that I thought I had "lost" and just bought replacements for ) - I'm thinking I might go buy a lottery ticket this week as the Cruiser Karma seems to be flowing well

Below is what I found and what I'm assuming you need. I looked at the bumper on my 80 and I think I have the brackets setup in the pictures with how they go. If you look closely the DS bracket looks "tweaked" a little (bottom front of vertical piece). Never noticed any issue with the bumper when it was on the LX so hopefully the tweak is not an issue...

For future reference. I received the brackets for the '97 and elongated the uppermost hole to align with the mounting holes on the frame of my '92. In stock form it's about 1/8-3/16 shy of being a perfect fit. The bumper is on and looks great.
