It seems like the upper half (or 7/8 actually) possibly unscrews from the lower bent part of the shifter. It's not loose and I don't want to break the thing twisting it. I'd like to remove it to get a tight shift boot over the top that snugs against the narrow base but doesn't slide over the fat upper shifter.

The only part that unscrews is the knob. That's the only way to slide a boot on. Is this for your 40? Can you use a boot from a 60?

No, there is a rubber sleeve (bushing) in there, designed to reduce vibration. Use grease or WD 40 to slide that boot over, it will work.

Thanks guys. I'll try the slip trick. The vibration reducer makes sense, as it has flex but won't seem to break loose.

Cam- Yes for my 40. I'll see if what I have works then may move towards something else if I have to. Wanna post a pic of what the 60 boot looks like? I'm not familiar enough with them.

Bull, he meant dissassembly of the shifter, not removal of the shifter, unless he posed the question wrong. And, you can't get the boot on from the bottom, gotta go from top down...

Also wondered about heating it up to bend the shifter a little. I'm afraid I'll melt the rubber boot and maybe damage the large rubber outer coating if I can't seperate the main shifter from the small bent part that slides into the tranny. Should I be concerned?

thread hijack, sorry....

Is is the same for the H44, too? I've been trying to unscrew my shifter knob, but it won't budge. Is it a friction-type fit, and different from the H55?

I bought my shifter and knob seperate so I KNOW mine split, but I'm certain they all seperate...
